In 1993 I researched and published "Vampyres: A Tribute to the Ultimate
in Erotic Horror Cinema", a book brimming with behind the scenes
anecdotes, exclusive interviews and many previously unseen photographs.
It proved more popular than anticipated and the following year a revised
and expanded edition appeared. It is the 2nd edition that is presented
here on this DVD.
Almost a decade later VAMPYRES continues to enjoy cult celebrity. Since
the book went out of print there have been two noteworthy festival
reunions in England, the first bringing together José Larraz and
Marianne Morris for the first time in almost 25 years, a second
assembling producer Brian Smedley-Aston and cast members Marianne
Morris, Brian Deacon and Sally Faulkner. In the intervening years the
"elusive" Vampyre, Anulka Dziubinska, has also been located and
interviewed from her domicile in the United States.
In 2000 Anchor Bay premiered the film on DVD, stimulating interest all
over again. Regrettably it was not the fully uncut version everyone anticipated
it would be and there was sufficient cause for Blue Underground to re-release it
with the precious missing seconds restored and even more supplementary materials.
I myself continue to hold the film in high esteem and in 2001, with the blessing
of writer/director Jose Larraz, I adapted the film into a novel
(published in England by FAB Press).
Back in 1974, for most of those involved, VAMPYRES was just another job.
Little could any of them have known it would still hold the spotlight
almost 30 years later. Long shall it continue to do so.
