Finding components
and datasheets
Many readers phone and write us with questions about components. Typical
questions include: who’s the manufacturer of that IC, and where can I find
a datasheet? Unfortunately we can not always help, mainly because of lack
of time (who else would look after the magazine?). However, you may not
have realized that with an Internet connection available you’ve access to
extensive databases covering components and datasheets.
Although this month’s subject was covered
before on the Electronics On-Line page (see
‘Semiconductor overviews’ in the March 1998
issue) as well as on a datasheet (issue Janu-
ary 1999), some more coverage is apparently
in order in view of the many requests we get
every day.
One of the best websites to start your
search for component data or datasheets is
still the
Chip Directory
[1] run by Jaap van
Ganswijk from the Netherlands. Since its first
appearance on the web, the number of
approved mirror sites has risen to about 25, so
the site should have a good accessibility rate.
Although the Chip Directory by itself already
offers a substantial database of technical
specifications of all kinds of semiconductor, on
the homepage it also gives you an optional
access to other powerful search engines like
ChipDocs
[2],
ECG
[3],
Questlink
[4],
IC Mas-
ter
[5] and
Free Trade Zone
[6]. Note that the
latter two are only accessible after registra-
tion. Most of these search engines start dig-
ging in the component archives run by semi-
conductor manufacturers, and then return
information on where the relevant component
(or its datasheet) may be found.
If you want to look a bit further and would
like to know manufacturer contact addresses,
a visit to the
Hardware Web
homepage [7] is
recommended. The site contains long lists of
electronics-related web addresses. There are
several overviews: web addresses only for
datasheets; addresses of semiconductor man-
ufacturers; distributors. There’s also a sepa-
rate overview of passive components and con-
nectors, plus a list of companies involved in
electronics test and measurement equipment.
Finally, there’s
EG3
[8], a web
portal for electronics which not only
contains a component search
engine, but also information on lots
of other electronics and computer-
related subjects, including Internet
protocols and robotics, to mention
just two.
