Chapter One: First Steps
David Campbell read the first paragraph of Arthur’s deposition for the third time, then realized he still
was not absorbing the information and threw down the file in disgust. He ran long, strong fingers through
blond hair peppered lightly with silver strands, and sighed. “What the hell’s wrong with me?”
David stood and walked over to a large window facing the Gulf of Mexico, watching as seagulls
performed aerial acrobatics above white-flocked waves. The trouble was, he knew
exactly
what was
wrong — he just didn’t know what to do about it. He should be with his grandchildren right now,
enjoying the weekend, instead of spending his Saturday at the office working on a nuisance case. But
Kendall, his daughter-in-law, had informed him that Joy and Jason would be at the picnic, and David had
bailed.
David turned away from the window and flopped down onto the plump-cushioned leather sofa against
the wall. Approximately two years earlier, he had seen Joy and Jason again for the first time in many
years. Until that moment, he hadn’t even realized how much he missed them. How much they both meant
to him. The sad part was that he had thought to himself at the time that he would do whatever it took to
bring them back into his life — then was too weak-willed to actually do so.
David rubbed his tired eyes and frowned.
Weak.
He hated the word. Hated the feeling. But when it
came to these two lovers from his past, he couldn’t seem to get beyond the self-imposed exile he’d
sentenced himself to so long ago.
Joy.
A rush of heat flooded his groin as he pictured her two years ago at Kendall’s New Year’s Eve
party. A petite, slender brunette when they first met, he had been surprised to find her plump now, with
silver streaks throughout her dark locks. The other surprise was the fact that she had still looked beautiful
to him, stirring a desire he had thought long dead. Joy was the only woman he had ever truly cared about.
He had considered asking her to marry him, back in college. But he hadn’t been able to reconcile his
feelings for her with his equally intense feelings for Jason, so he had let her go. At least, that was the
official version he gave himself, when he thought about it.
Jason.
David shifted uncomfortably as his cock began to harden. At a time when homosexuality was the
kiss of death — especially for someone like him, heading into law practice with a bunch of hard-nosed,
macho Texans with a black-and-white outlook on life — David had been drawn to Jason despite the
stigma. Under the guise of helping out a friend, David had invited Jason to move in with him, and it hadn’t
been long before the relationship became intimate. He’d never really felt as though he was doing anything
wrong, all those years ago. He loved Jason, just as he loved Joy, regardless of the fact that Jason was a
man.
But David was the product of a stiff-necked, Southern aristocrat in a long line of such men, and he knew
that all the help and advantages he enjoyed, courtesy of his father’s connections, would evaporate
instantly if it was ever suspected that he was gay. So he and Jason lived a lie, hiding their feelings in
public, until David felt that he could no longer believably justify the amount of time they spent together
and called it off. Or so he had said when he kicked Jason out.
The faint memory of a harsh voice and his father’s strong arms restraining him echoed in his mind. David
sat up, burying his head in his hands as a wave of intense sadness washed over him. How could one
person love two people so much? Then he laughed, shaking his head. Hell, his own son was involved in
an openly acknowledged three-way marriage. It might not be a marriage recognized by the law, but no
one who spent any time with the three of them could doubt that they loved each other completely —
heart, mind, body, and soul.
David had spent years trying to destroy the relationship between Josh and Sutter — a relationship he
had inadvertently facilitated when he sponsored a young, disadvantaged boy into the prestigious private
school, Whitecliff. He realized now that he had felt responsible not just for bringing Josh into Sutter’s life,
but for Sutter’s “aberration.” His homosexuality. Or bisexuality, actually. He had been fighting not only
his son’s way of life, but the knowledge that, deep down inside, he was the same.
Thank God Kendall had come along. David might have ultimately exiled himself from his son, as well —
the only person left that he had cared about. But Kendall was a fighter. Threatened by his actions, she
had done what was necessary to make him face himself, and in the end, he had accepted their alternate
lifestyle. For some reason, this did not make it any easier for him to accept those desires in himself.
The tightness at his groin became unbearable, and David unbuttoned his jeans and pulled down the
zipper. He pushed his underwear aside and grasped his throbbing cock, watching as a droplet of

daughter.
“G’pa?”
David’s heart did a somersault, and he spread his lips in a wide grin. “Hayley! Yes, it’s Grandpa!”
“G’pa!” There was a clatter, and then Kendall was laughing into the phone.
“So what do you think, Dad? How does it feel, to hear her say ‘Grandpa’ for the first time?”
David couldn’t wipe the grin off his face. “Awesome!”
“So why are you up there?” The teasing note faded from Kendall’s voice and she became serious. “You
should be here, David. With the people who love you.” There was a pause, then she added. “With the
people
you
love. All of them.”
David hesitated. Kendall knew of his feelings, and she thought he was crazy to continue denying them.
Maybe she was right. Most men fantasized about being with two women at the same time. Here he was,
jacking off to images of two people he could be spending time with in under an hour. But it was hard to
set aside years of self-conditioning. Hard to put aside his pride.
Pride.
David looked down at himself and burst out laughing. He was standing half-naked in his office on

“David? Is something wrong?”

It still surprised David sometimes, how good it felt to have Kendall call him Dad. Sutter, too, for that
matter. Before Kendall, Sutter’s “

” had been full of bitterness and resentment. Thanks to her, David
enjoyed a good relationship with Sutter now, and he was beginning to win over Josh, as well. Kendall
was right — it felt good to have people in his life who really cared about him. “Yes, Kendall. Really.”
Her breath came out in a rush. “That’s great! Hayley, Race — your Grandpa’s coming!” Hayley’s
giggles and Race’s happy shout were music to David’s ears. “Do you hear?” Kendall asked.
David nodded, then realized she couldn’t hear that. “Yes.”
Her tone became serious once more. “But… are you sure? I mean, it’s been so awkward, the last few
times. I don’t — ” She stopped, seeming at a loss for words.
David knew her well enough to guess that she was probably biting her lip, trying to decide how to tell
him that she didn’t want him to come if he was going to ruin everything. She would try to tell him nicely,
but she
would
tell him. That honesty was one of the things that endeared her to him. “Don’t worry,” he
said softly. “I’m going to talk to them this time. I’m ready to get some things out into the open.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m glad, David. Really glad.” He heard tears in her voice. “It’s been so hard — ”
“I know how much Joy and Jason have come to mean to the five of you, Kendall. I — ” He almost
couldn’t say the words, and had to swallow hard before continuing. “I care about them, too. And I’m
going to let them know that.”
Maybe.
“You can’t imagine how happy I am.”
David savored the strange mixture of apprehension and anticipation running through his veins. “Actually,
I think I can.”

David was surprised to find himself humming with the radio as he raced along in his deep blue, fully
restored nineteen-seventy-four Mustang convertible. He had cleaned himself up at the office and changed
into jeans and a golf shirt — one of the extra outfits he kept in his closet there. It was as though a great
weight had been lifted from his shoulders, and he was free to enjoy life again. He felt as though he had
reached a major crossroads in his life, and made the right decision. It definitely beat feeling miserable,
and he now realized that he had been feeling miserable for far too long.
David turned his car into the long gravel drive leading up to the house, admiring the view. Sutter and
Josh had put together a magnificent building, but Kendall had made it a home, in more ways than one.
With the garden that covered the porch in a profusion of bougainvillea, jasmine, and passionflower vines;
with her forceful personality, yet accepting, loving nature and the laughter that seemed to follow wherever
she went. A wonderful blend of disparate elements, just like her relationship with Sutter and Josh.
David parked and turned off the engine. Suddenly nervous, he sat in the car, wondering if he really was
doing the right thing. Then the front door burst open and Race was toddling across the porch, Sutter
rushing to grab him just before he reached the steps.
“G’pa!”
David threw open the car door and met his son and grandson at the bottom of the stairs. Taking Race
from Sutter’s arms, he held him high, whirling in a circle. “Race, m’boy! You, too?”
Race giggled and shouted, “G’pa, G’pa!”
David hugged him tight and grinned at Sutter.
His son chuckled. “You think it’s cute now, but wait until he’s said it a half-a-million times in thirty
minutes.”
David shook his head. “I couldn’t ever get tired of hearing this.”
Sutter smiled and clapped his father on the back as they walked up the stairs. “I’m glad you came,
Dad.”
