on the market. I had passed through my D&D phase, and
wasreallyhookedonthe AmberDicelessRPG atthattime.I
wantedsomethinginbetween,though—lightonrules,but
withapointbasedstructurethathadafewmoreoptionsthan
Amberpresented.
he product did exactly what I wanted it to, and
fortunatelywaswhatmanygamerswerelookingfor.Butfor
every “hey, this is great” I heard several “this is great, but it
needs more.…” BESM and it’s core Tri-Stat System evolved
with market forces and gamer demands into the second
edition(chielyhelmedbyDavidPulver,pointsystemguru).
Itkeptthesamesimpleideasandstructure,butaddedmore
rulesandframework.hesecondeditionreachedevenmore
gamersandgarneredusevenmorefans.Itwasheadinginthe
rightdirection,itseemed,thoughwedidlosethesupportof
somethatpreferredthesimplicityoftheirstedition.
Andstill,Iheard“ BESM isn’tdeinedenough.Wewant
moreconcreterules.”
Iwasinaconundrum. BESM 1ewasagameIwrotefor
myself, while 2e was a game I wrote for others. Still, there
seemed to be room for “improvement,” and the company
survivaldependedongivingthecustomerswhattheywanted.
If I could modify Tri-Stat to please everyone, the company
wouldprosper.
Ofcourse,thatwasimpossible. SilverAgeSentinels (the
progenitorof Tri-StatdX )wasmyattempttoaddmoreoptions
to Tri-Stat while also streamlining the game and making it
easiertolearn.Itsucceededgreatlyforonegoal—givingeven
morerulescrunchtothosewhowantedit—butthegamelost
touch with simplicity. For many, it was even confusing … a
greatideawithanunfulilledexecution.
So when I knew we needed to develop BESM 3e, the
questionwasobvious:howdoIkeepthedesirableandlexible
point-based creation, but eliminate the confusion from Tri-
StatdXandsuccessfullymigratecloserto BESM 1esimplicity?
Ater taking many pokes at the system itself (with great
assistancefromDavid),Idiscoveredthatthepresentationof
information was just as important as the information itself.
he only way to create a system both simple and complex
involvedpresentingthecomplexsysteminasimplemanner.
Sowhat ,youareaskingyourself, doyoumeanbythat ?
he book that you now hold in your hands says to you
“hereareallthecomplexrulesyouwant,”whilealsomentioning
“and here’s how to avoid them.” You can create your point-
basedcharacterfromscratchORpickaracialandoccupational
template and go from there. You can individualise your
AttributesbyaddingVariablesandRestrictions(avariationon
thedreadedPMVs)ORyoucanjustusetheAttributesstraight
outofthebookwithoutanymodiications.Youcanleshout
yourcharacterwithacomprehensivelistofSkillsORyoucan
notuseSkillsatallinyourgame.Youcanselectyourattack
anddefencecombatoptionsfromadetailedlistORyoucan
ignoreallsuchoptionsandjustmakeasimpleroll.Andyes,
I even added benchmarks, one-shot kills, and a dimension-
hoppingmulti-genreanimesetting.BESM3eisabufetgame:
takewhatyoulike,passonwhatyoudon’t.Intheend,you’ll
haveagreatmealandwalkawayeminentlysatisied.
Ithinkthisgameistheidea“gamersgame.”Ifyouarean
Amber DRPGfan,orafanof BESM 1e,however,youwon’t
indthatthisgamereplicatesthatlevelofsimplicity.Tri-Stat
hassimplychangedtoomuchtoreturntoaframeworkthat
simpleandloose.Ithinkthatitcomescloserthanthesecond
editiondid,though,sincethepresentationoftherulesshows
you how to return to the basics. I believe that the proper
balancehasbeenachieved,and BESM isnowthebestofboth
worlds.Tastesgreat,lessilling.
