academy noun [count]
a school or college that teaches a particular subject
or skill: a military/police academy
muse noun [count]
someone or something that provides the
enthusiasm and determination for an artist, poet,
musician etc to create something artistic
bohemian adjective
living or behaving in an informal way that is
considered typical of artists and writers: a
bohemian lifestyle
separate verb [intransitive]
to stop living with your husband, wife, or sexual
partner:
Millie’s parents separated when she was three.
dance hall noun [count]
a large room or building where people paid to go
and dance to popular music in the past
pair up phrasal verb [intransitive or transitive]
to form a pair or make two people form a pair:
Two students from each class pair up to produce a
short play.
revolution noun [count]
a sudden or major change, especially in ideas or
methods: a sexual/cultural revolution
fascinated adjective
very interested or attracted by someone or
something
suicide noun [count or uncount]
the action of deliberately killing yourself:
commit suicide (=kill yourself): Police believe he
committed suicide.
lighten or lighten up [verb, intransitive or
transitive]
if a situation or someone’s mood lightens, or
someone or something lightens it, it becomes more
relaxed:
Gina tried to lighten the atmosphere by telling a
joke.
inspire verb [transitive]
to give someone the enthusiasm to do or create
something:
Inspired by her example, other zoologists have
begun working with apes in the wild.
collaborate verb [intransitive]
to work with someone in order to produce
something:
collaborate in/on: She directed the film and
collaborated with Goldman on the script.
geometry noun [uncount]
the part of mathematics that deals with the
relationships between lines, angles, and surfaces
subdued adjective
not very loud or bright: subdued
noises/lighting/colours
