As the show takes place during the Edo period, some terms are fairly hard to equate to modern terms. This .pdf serves as a
guide for these terms, as well as to provide some background information regarding certain aspects of the show.
Oiwa Inari
Inari is a Shinto fox deity of harvests. Inari is a popular deity and many Inari shrines are built all across Japan. According
to the Oiwa Inari Tamiya Shrine, the reason why strange happenings take place during performances of Yotsuya Kaidan is
that Oiwa is displeased that she is been portrayed as a vengeful ghost.

Sotoba
A Sotoba is a wooden grave tablet. In the anime, only half of the words on the table are shown. The exact words that are
inscribed on it are
俗名民谷伊右衛門
(Zokumei Min Tamiya Iemon), which means “The person with a bad reputation,
Tamiya Iemon.”
Namo Amida Butsu
Namo Amida Butsu is the Japanese variant of the Amida Sutra from Buddhism. The usage of the Amida Sutra is to remove
bad karma.

Nirvana
Iemon yells out "Joubutsu" at the ghost of Oiwa, which translates to “Enter Nirvana.” This is basically the Shinto/Buddhist
equivalent of the phase, “Go to hell.”

Heso no O no Sho
Heso no O is the Japanese term for umbilical cord. It has been a tradition in Japan to dry and preserve the umbilical cord
of a child. This is done so the umbilical cord symbolizes the child’s link to the mother. In some situations, when the child is
severely sick, a bit of the umbilical cord is ground up and dissolved in water to act as a medicine for the child to drink.
Before birth certificates and other forms of identification became common, a piece of paper with the details regarding a
child's birth was kept with the umbilical cord. This paper was called the Heso no Wo no Sho.
