Landscape Awards Program aims at:
• Making a concerned citizenry aware of how quality
landscaping can improve our environment and property
values.
• Recognizing citizens who have taken action through
quality landscaping to attain this end.
• Rewarding skilled professionals who have executed
quality workmanship.
• Encouraging landscape contractors and landscape
architects to continue their efforts to raise the industry’s
image by consistent use of quality materials and competent
workmanship.

The judges determined the quality of materials (both
plant and construction), design, completeness of installation,
workmanship, and horticultural correctness in the landscape
installation using the digital images, plans and descriptions
submitted with each entry. To ensure that each project would
be judged consistently over a two-day period, the same four
judges reviewed every entry.
Judges for the 2007 Ohio Nursery & Landscape
Association’s Landscape Awards Program were Robert
Bailey, production manager for Darby Creek Nursery
in Hilliard, Ohio; Pam Bennett, state master gardener
coordinator and horticulture educator for The Ohio State
University Extension in Spring eld, Ohio; Forrest Gibson,
associate for The EDGE Group in Columbus, Ohio; and
Rachael Harkleroad, landscape designer for POD Design
in Columbus, Ohio.
in each category. Grand Awards will be presented to the
rm entering the winning project, with additional recognition
to the landscape architect or landscape designer, as well
as the client. A Judges’ Special Award may be given at the
discretion of the judges to those entries that merit special
consideration. Jury and judging procedures for the Judges’
Special Award will be the same as the Grand Award. Merit
Awards may be given at the discretion of the judges. Awards
may not be given in a category if, in the judges’ opinions, no
entry warrants an award.

The Gray-Wilbur Residence
“This project was designed to accommodate
property ooding caused by heavy rain as well as
traf c from two to four people on a routine basis. The
water feature was constructed to provide a point of
relaxation. Relocated nearer to the pond, the porch
house was elevated and given furniture and a ceiling
fan, which provides the client with a tranquil place
to relax. The large rectangular rock outside of the
porch house is the perfect place to dangle your feet
in the clear water and enjoy the atmosphere.”

The Pottschmid Residence
“The owners of this home and their two teenage
children enjoy entertaining and needed a patio area
to maximize space. A brick paver patio made of
tumbled brick in an earth tone color blended well with
the house. A sitting wall with a built-in re pit was
added for extra seating. Hemlocks provide privacy
from neighbors and redbuds create a natural canopy.
Ornamental iron and decorative live baskets are
mounted on the side of the garage wall to soften the
view. This new patio is an outdoor space that is both
functional and aesthetically pleasing.”

The Boyer Residence
“This project is functional as well
as beautiful and is made up of four
separate spaces. The centerpiece
is the outdoor kitchen, which in-
cludes a grill, a sink and lighting. A
gas re pit is located in the center
of the lower brick patio. The upper
patio is a small dining area that is
enclosed with a fence for safety.
The middle patio is the main spot
for entertaining. A custom made
cedar lattice and cascading water
feature create a soothing
atmosphere.”

“Built on the site of an old deck, this new brick patio
makes use of the space to create an outdoor living
area. A simple, square-cut, cedar arbor covers the
entire patio, complementing the modern look of the
home. Changes in brick patterns help de ne the
different spaces and the lush landscape and cus-
tom rock bubbler make the perfect setting for a few
friends to relax. The dining area is less formal, and
is screened from the driveway view by a custom
lattice panel.”

The Tartan Fields - Taylor Residence
“The goals of this project were to provide curb appeal
for the surrounding neighborhood, give the homefront
a formal feel, and to create the illusion of depth in
the wooded site. Design elements include introduc-
ing planting beds at the front of the property, which
contribute to a courtyard appearance, and using vari-
ous perennials for a natural look and interesting color.
Mass plantings in the back create a lush space that
allows for entertaining in an intimate setting. The use
of Picea and Tsuga effectively screen the property to
maximize privacy as well as enhancing the wooded
atmosphere of the yard.”

A Private Residence
“Our clients asked that we transform their lawn into a
retreat that would more closely t the new addition of
a bay window room. A cascading waterfall was con-
structed as the visual centerpiece and a randomly
cut sandstone patio was built to provide an area for
relaxed seating. The edge of the patio cantilevers
over the pond providing a seamless intersection, and
a curbstone step leads up to an intimate dining area.”

Boardman
The Deblasio Residence
“This project was designed as a solution to the
elevation disparities between the client’s walkway
terrace and new garage. Columns subtly add
architectural form, while barnstone retains the beds
and adds historic air. Crown molding links the
garage to the house and the existing chiseled trough
water feature helps break up the auto court to create
a green oasis. Beds and pavement rotate around a
weeping Katsura with lampposts and boulders and
a glimpse of Yellow Creek can be seen past the split
rail fence that encloses the yard.”
