Funding Progress
Since fundraising be-
gan in February 1998 we have
raised $1,762,363. Of that
amount 49% came from pri-
vate foundation grants, 7%
from nonprofit organizations,
25 % from our generous do-
nors, 9% through our steward-
ship program and the remain-
ing 10% from the hard work
of raffles, food sales and con-
certs, plus interest earned.
The work continues as fund-
ing permits: Expenses to date
have been $1,722,252.

S UMMER P ROGRESS
The restoration project took many
different directions since our last re-
port. Because we developed a leak
over the arch of the sanctuary the
crew found that the wall that supports
the east cornice was the problem.
This wall was covered in stucco and
hiding an ugly secret. There were
large voids and severely deteriorated
mortar that had been covered up in
the past fooling the architect to be-
lieve we only needed the flashing
replaced. After the summer crew re-
moved the stucco and repointed the
wall adding stones where necessary it fixed the problem.
The completion of the choir loft staircase room roof was accomplished. In the origi-
nal blue prints this roomÓs purpose was to house the stairs that were to lead to the choir
loft. Since the choir loft never was finished the space has been used as a confessional,
we do plan on it to be used for that purpose once again and perhaps other things. A fam-
ily has expressed interest in funding to have the entrance to this area constructed to rep-
licate the main entryway, thus adding a new element of beauty to the church.
The reminder of the alcove roofs except the one next to the bell tower were finished
in early summer. Except for the one next to the bell tower, it will be completed after the
crew finishes repointing the exterior walls of the bell tower, as that roof is part of the
scaffold support system for the bell tower work.
The crew removed the rotted wood of the belfry replacing the wood and they gave it
a coat of primer and fresh paint. While some of the crew worked on that, others worked
on repointing the exterior wall of the bell tower to help keep the work on schedule.
Tommy Spottedbird also took the opportu-
nity to give the crosses on the cornices a
new coat of paint.
Another problem that side tracked the
project was the continual breaks in the main
waterline to the rectory offices and parish
hall. Each time the line would break the
crew would be forced to stop their repoint-
ing work due to lack of water. We were
able to work in collaboration with the
Tribal Water Department on this project.
The parish paid for the pipe and the water
department crew did the actual work sav-
ing the parish $11,000.

10 TH A NNUAL R AFFLE R ESULTS & 2011 C ALENDAR
The 10th Annual Raffle was quite interesting this year.
Usually the winners range from coast to coast, but this year
Mescalero had five winners and the rest are residents of New
Mexico. Winner of the $1,000 was Amelia Trujillo of San Pa
tricio, NM, The SouthWest Airfare and $100 Marriot Motel
Card winner was Rose Miller, of Mescalero. Winner of the Inn
of the Mountian Gods Get-away was Danny Saiza also of Mes
calero. The $250 Wal Mart Gift Card was won by Suzie Serna
from Ruidoso, NM. Samuel Flores from Boles Acres, NM won
the Pencil Portrait and the Cradleboard was won by Sheryl
Vickers from Roswell, NM. Ernie Serna from Espanola, NM won the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Set and Hunter
Beck, of Mescalero won the Silver and Coral Necklace Set. Celia Garza from El Paso won the Pendleton Blanket
that was donated in memory of Samuel Chee, Sr. of Mescalero. Florene Torres of Mescalero won the $100 Home
Depot Card and the winner of the Beaded Medicine Bag was Joe Perez from Ruidoso, NM. Ricardo Ramirez, the
Bishop of Las Cruces won the Silver necklace Set. Winning the Kathy Morrow Cutting Board was Bertha Morgan
of Mescalero. The last prize, a framed Tepee in the Snow photograph went to Dana Knight in Mesilla Park, NM.
The winners of the top ticket sellers this year were, Emily Saenz of Ruidoso, NM Helen Klinekole of Mes-
calero, Marlene Pellman of Mescalero and Lupe Martinez from Alamogordo, NM. We are very grateful for their
help and that of everyone who have donated prizes, and those who bought tickets and those who made extra dona-
tions. Special thanks have to be acknowledged for those who helped with the mass mailing, this is a big job that
takes three days of hard work. This year Rose Miller, Clarice Rocha, Josie Tortilla, Tonita Simms, Rita Shaffer and
Lynda Sanchez all rolled up their sleeves and pitched in.
The raffle netted $16,055, down by over $4,000 from last
year, which seems to indicate what everyone keeps saying Ðthe
economic times are bad and not soon to recover and are affecting
just about everyoneÑ is a harsh reality.
A funding opportunity that we have been working on is start-
ing to show promise. The calendar, which features some of our favor-
ite photos of the church are selling for $15.00 plus $5.00 for mailing.
These are nice Christmas gifts for those people who have everything
or are hard to buy for. They can be purchased through our website,
through the mail, email or by phone. If the calendars are successful
we will add other items such as mouse pads, baseball caps and other
personalized St. Joseph Apache Mission Restoration Project items.

D IRECTOR Ô S R EPORT T OMMY S POTTEDBIRD
Since the last ÐBurden BasketÑ newsletter much progress has been made on the church. Administra-
tively, we have been busy responding to those who generously donated to the restoration project. In
October I had the opportunity to take a small break from the restoration by going to visit family and
friends in Oklahoma . The nine hour drive gave me a lot of time to meditate on many things, espe-
cially my job. The question of Ðwhy is the restoration of this church so important to meÑ kept coming
to mind. I am not Catholic and I am not from the Mescalero reservation, why am I so dedicated to this
job? I could not recall a job ever being as important to me as what I am doing now. The only answer
was Ðbecause this is GodÓs churchÑ and this may be the plan God had for me. I thank Him for the
continued progress we (the crew) are making on the church which is also known as a VeteranÓs Me-
morial. ÐThank youÑ for your continued support financially and spiritually. Your prayers help us to
maintain a steady course as we work toward the completion of this project. God Bless you and yours.

C URRENT W ORK
Scaffolding is now setup on the interior south
side of the church where the crew will concentrate their
work for the winter. We had no idea that the deteriora-
tion of the mortar was so bad, there are many very large
stones missing from the top rows of the wall. The crew
became very concerned that the wall might collapse, but
Tommy assured them that there were plenty stones be-
hind the voids that would keep that from happening.
Tommy has spent many hours cutting stones
from a large bolder to the sizes needed to fill in the large
voids. It is always amazing to see how the work contin-
ues through each stage, starting from the removing the
loose deteriorated mortar, cleaning the voids and stone

faces. The next step in the process is what is called the base
coat, this is where the lime mortar is forced into the voids by
the flick of the wrist using a very small trowel. The crew
replaces the missing large stones and in smaller voids place
smaller rocks and in deep holes they use small broken pieces
of clay tiles from the old roof to help make the mortar
stronger. The final step is the top coat; it is allowed to
harden slightly and scraped back to form smooth even joints
between the stone. The mortar is misted twice a day to allow
it to cure slowly to become strong and long lasting.

S AYING F AREWELL TO A G REAT M AN
Since our last progress report we lost one of our board mem-
bers, Keith Miller. Keith was the type of man that everyone liked and
respected. Born on Dec 6, 1926 on the Mescalero Apache Reservation,
Keith grew up the Indian way learning the language and traditions of
his people. He started school out at White Tail and finished his educa-
tion at the Mescalero school. Keith worked many years for the Cattle
Growers Association on the reservation and entered the Army at just
17 years old. He spent his military service in the engineering depart-
ment. After his time in the Army he came back to Mescalero and mar-
ried Rose Dolan, the love of his life, they were devoted to each other.
He and Rose were a great witness to what a good marriage is, and had
one son they lovingly called Sonny. Keith worked at the Mescalero
fish hatchery, and in many different departments at the Holloman Air
Force Base for over twenty years. He also served one year as Secretary
and nineteen years as Vice President on the Tribal Council. Keith and
Rose both joined the Restoration Committee when it was formed. He
never met a stranger that didnÓt end up being a friend, he love his family, friends, and all people whatever their
walk of life. Keith always was eager to volunteer at whatever needed to be done to help his family, friends, the
church and the restoration project. We all will miss him very much.
