In these tutorials, you’ll learn how to use 3ds Max
for creating materials and maps and applying them
to your models and scenes. You’ll also learn about
some of the tools in 3ds Max for using materials
and maps.

Materials are like paint. With materials, you make
apples red and oranges orange. You put the shine
in chrome and the polish on glass. By applying
maps,youcanaddimages,patterns,andeven
surface texture to objects. Materials are what make
your scenes look real.

All the files necessary for this tutorial are provided
on the program disc in the \tutorialsdirectory.
Before starting the tutorials, copy the \tutorials
folder from the disc to your local program
installation.
Mapping is a method of projecting pictorial
information (materials) onto surfaces. It is a lot
like wrapping a present with wrapping paper,
except the pattern is projected mathematically,
with modifiers, rather than being taped to the
surface.

Chapter 5: Materials and Mapping
This tutorial introduces the Material Editor, the
master design studio for materials and maps. In
the following lessons, you will learn how to assign
materials to objects, how to create basic materials,
and how to create several kinds of advanced
materials.

scene objects, and other MAX files.
• Assigning materials to scene objects.
• Creating basic materials, including wireframe,
2-sided, and self-illuminated.

• Using texture, opacity and bump mapping.
• Creating and adjusting mapping coordinates.
• Creating multi/sub-object materials using drag
and drop.
• Creating a raytrace material.

• Creating stars using noise.
• Using Shellac material to create realistic human
skin.
Examples of different materials
Whenyouworkwith3dsMax,youaccessmaterials
from three different places: from the Material
Editor, from scenes, or from an external collection
of predesigned materials called a materiallibrary.

from a material library into the Material Editor.

Load a material library:
1. Start or reset 3ds Max.
If you receive the dialog asking if you really
want to reset the program, answer Yes.
2. Open intro_materials.max.
Note: If you see the File Load: UnitsM ismatch
dialog ,choosetheoptionRescaleTheFile
Objects To The System Unit Scale.
3. Press the M key on your keyboard to open the
Material Editor.
The sample slot in the upper-left corner has
a white border around it, indicating that it is
active.

4. Right-click the active sample slot. From
theright-clickmenu,choose5x3Sample
Windows.Thesamplepaletteredrawsto
display 15 slots.
6. In the Material/Map Browser > Browse From
group, choose Mtl Library (Mtl stand for
“Material.”)
7. IntheFilegroup,clickOpen.
The default Material Library, 3dsmax.mat,is
displayed. A number of others might be listed
as well.
8. In the Open Material Library dialog, navigate
to the \tutorials\intro_to_materialsdirectory
and choose stillife.mat.
Thenamesofthematerialsappearinalist.
5. On the Material Editor toolbar, click Get
Material.
The Material/Map Browser appears.
9. On the Material/Map Browser toolbar,
click View List+Icons.
Athumbnailofeachmaterialappearsnextto
its name.
