Author’’s Introductiion
I think I’ve traced my problem back to high school, the source of so many of life’s difficulties. I alternated reading books by David Eddings, Stephen
R. Donaldson, and Raymond Feist with books by Robert Ludlum, Frederick Forsyth, and, if I was feeling adult, John Le Carré. All these books
have now blended together into a fictional mental mash, and I often remember pieces of them better than a book I just finished a week ago. Not
that they’re better, they just found my brain at the good, impressionable time.
I say this by way of explaining why the city of Oversoul is the way it is. It’s got magic and monsters and such since it is, after all, a fantasy set-
ting, but it’s also got as much politics and intrigue as I could squeeze into a 6,000-person town. That’s the stuff that really gets my blood racing.
Don’t get me wrong, I love taking on the insanely difficult beasty, but my best memories of RPG sessions came from interactions with other peo-
ple, PCs and NPCs alike. If everyone still capable of breathing was trying to double-cross each other fifteen ways ‘til Tuesday, all the while going
up against ugly monsters and fiendish traps, then I was happy as a clam, until, of course, someone double-crossed me.
While writing this, I had fun imagining the different futures that lay ahead for Oversoul as it got into the hands of various gaming groups. I hope,
somewhere, the Blond Rope Faction finally breaks through their wall, finds untold riches, and dominates the town. I hope the mossmen make
their move, taking out faction leaders and threatening to disintegrate every available entrance to the Labyrinth. I hope Sudder Dunset gets fed up
with being second banana and decides to govern for real instead of being a puppet.
Most of all, I hope that wonderfully bizarre futures I haven’t conceived for Oversoul come to pass. I believe the gamers of the world are weirder
than I can ever imagine them to be, and, to date, they’ve never let me down on that score. I anxiously await hearing what they do with this town,
especially their creative ways of blowing it to smithereens.
Before I duck out, I need to thank the others of Team Oversoul who made this what it is: Todd Crapper made it possible; Sean Frolich, Clayton
Bunce, and Kathleen Hardy made it pretty; Craig McNamee and his playtestin’ band made it make more sense, and George "Clay" Mitchell just
plain made it better. None of them ever broke down and called me a bleedin’ moron in the course of the project, and that means a lot to me.
