Introduction to English – Polish Contrastive Grammar
The aims of the course are :
- to compare English and Polish in terms of similarities and differences in the areas of the morphological, lexical, grammatical and phonological systems,
- to draw students’ attention to the areas where the knowledge of their native language is helpful in learning the target language and where it leads to overgeneralisations and other mistakes,
- to provide students with linguistic material where the two language systems might be compared.
Assessment criteria:
The signatures and marks will be given on the basis of:
- active participation in the classes,
- 2 short tests (1 theoretical, 1 practical)
- voluntary presentation of the aspect discussed in classes on the basis of literature ( 6-8 examples 5-10 minutes)
Topics for 11 classes:
1. Introduction to the course, word formation processes revisited (examples from Polish and English)
2 Introduction + types of contrast
3/4. Lexical transfer
5. Grammatical contrast : word order
6. Nouns and noun phrases
7. Grammatical contrast: the verb, complex sentences
8. Questions, Negation
9 . Modality in Polish and English
10. Passive constructions
11. Conditional sentences, complementation
12. Revision
Requirements for the final semester and exam marks
60 points – tests (2), 10 points – presentation (voluntary), 20 points - active participation (max 2 points per class), 10 points - attendance (10 - full attendance, 8 – two absences regardless of the reason, 5 within the regular limits, 0 - more than 5 absences)
Students who score less than 50%, take a final written exam. If they pass, their final mark is 3 and the exam mark is calculated according to the scale below:
50 – 60 satisfactory, 60-70 satisfactory +, 70 – 80 – good , 80 – 90 good +, 90 – 100 very good
Students who score more than 70 points can be released from the exam with the marks 4, 4+ and 5 , respectively. Students between 50 and 70 points take an exam. The exam has a written form and is a mixture of theoretical questions and practical tasks. The final examination mark is the mean of the marks obtained in two semesters 50 % and the oral examination result 50 %.
