This pattern is the result of my sister (Sally) asking me to design a cross which would be
relatively easy. I have shown three variations in the basic pattern which should be easy to
follow with the diagrams to help. There are two alternative centres to the cross and the third
cross will allow the maker to vary the size according to requirements. All crosses are
reversible.

Materials:
Two shuttles. Three colours in no. 20 o r 80 thread. Small beads (8 per cross). Finished
measurements are - in no. 20 thread 5 ¼” x 4” & in no. 80 thread 3 ¼” x 2 ½”

Cross # 1 – add 4 beads to Wsh1 these are later added to ring 9. Subsequent joins to R9 are
made to the right of each of these beads.
Round 1
N.B. – leave a very small gap between each SR for joining on
final round.
R1: 8 vsp 4 vsp 4
SR2: 4 vsp 4 / 8
SR3 – SR8: as SR2
R9: 4 BBBB 4
SR10 – SR13: as SR2
Ch: vsp 4 vsp 4
SR14: 4 + (vsp on SR13) 4 / vsp 8
SR15 – SR17: as SR14 joining to opposite vsp’s of last row
R18: 4 + (p on R9 to right of 1 st bead) 4
SR19 – SR26: Repeat from SR 10 – 17
R27: as R18
Continue in this way until all SR’s have been worked and joined where appropriate.
Finish with Ch of vsp 4 vsp 4 and join to 1 st vsp of R1. T & C. See fig. 1
Round 2 – 1 shuttle only

Repeat from * 6 times
R8: as R1
Ch: 8

Before working final joining round - thread the rings of round 2 up
through the split rings and chains of round 1.

Round 3 – two shuttles – add 4 beads to Wsh 2
R1: 2 + (to 1 st vsp on R1 of rnd 1) 2
Ch: 8 + LJ (1 st & 2 nd R’s of rnd 2) 8
R2: 4 + (gap btwn SR2 & SR3 of rnd 1) 4
Ch: 8 + LJ (3 rd & 4 th rings of rnd 2) 8
R3: 4 + (gap btwn SR4 & SR5 of rnd 1) 4
Ch: 8 + LJ (5 th & 6 th rings of rnd 2) 8
R4: 4 + (gap btwn SR6 & SR7 of rnd 1) 4

Continue in this way all round outer edge of cross. Joining final ch to base of R1. T & C.

Cross # 2 – 2 shuttles needed for all rounds.
This cross is worked in the same way as cross # 1 but
Round 1 - as before but without the centre rings (9, 18, 27 & 36).
Round 2 – add 4 beads to Wsh2 – work as follows
*R1: 4 vsp 4
Ch: 4 vsp 4
Repeat from * 6 times
R8: as R1
Ch: 4 RoCh (2 BBBB 2) - see fig. 5a for detail of centre of cross.
*R9: 4 vsp 4
Ch: 4 vsp 4
Repeat from * twice
R12: 4 vsp 4
Ch: 4
R13: 4 vsp 4
Ch: 4
*R14: 4 vsp 4
Ch: 4 + (p on opposite chain btwn R’s 11 & 12) 4
Repeat from * twice joining to opposite chains as before.

Ch: 4 RoCh (2 + to right of 1 st B of last RoCh) 4
Continue following fig. 5 until the last Chain has been joined.
Finish with
R43: 4 vsp 4
Ch: 4
R44: 4 vsp 4
Ch: 4 C & T to base of ring 1
Round 3 – as cross # 1
Alternative round 3 – 4 beads on Wsh2.
R1: 2 + (to 1 st vsp on R1 of rnd 1) 2
Ch: *6 + LJ (R1 of rnd 2) Repeat from * joining to
successive p’s of rnd2 until the 8 th R has been joined. On each
internal corner work 2ds. Continue until R12 has been joined
and then work the outer spurs of the cross as follows:-
Ch: 6
R2: 2+(1 st vsp on Ch AFTER SR13 on rnd1) 2
Ch: 6 vsp 2 + (vsp on R13 of rnd 2 & vsp on Ch btwn SR13
& SR14 of Rnd 1)
Continue with RoCh (2 + vsp on previous ch 4 B 4 vsp 2)
continue ch with 2 + (vsp on RoCh ) 6
R3: 2 + (vsp on SR14 of rnd 1) 2
Ch: 6
Continue all round the outer edge of the cross repeating the outer spurs as the first and the
inner corners as before.
