Microsoft® Train Simulator v.1 Readme

The following information is provided for the user with regard to late-breaking information that was not available at the time of standard user documentation. We recommend reviewing these issues before calling Microsoft Product Support Services.

ACTIVITIES

--Timer doesn’t update for loading saved Activities

If you save an Activity when the load or unload passengers and the timer is running, that timer doesn't update in the driving aid the next time you load the saved Activity. (You do still get the signal to depart at the expected time.)

--Royal Scot Rescue Activity

In the "Royal Scot Rescue" Activity it is crucial that the train get backed into Ribblehead siding 1 to register and enable the Activity to end. Back the train up as far as possible (to the buffer on this siding) to trigger the end of the Activity when you arrive with the Royal Scot's consist in Dent.

--Loading Activity during derailment

If you attempt to load a saved Activity during a derailment, Train Simulator may crash.

--NE Corridor Summer Express

1. The Edgewood station stop is very short. Using the Next Station display as a guide, come to a complete stop at exactly -0.01 miles to load/unload passengers.

2. Be aware that there is a delay near milepost 43.5 in waiting for the red light to change to green.

Waiting points are all being reset to zero seconds

--Waiting points for AI traffic

All the existing wait points for AI traffic have been reset to zero. If you make a change to a wait point, when the Activity is reloaded (either in the Activity Editor or the simulation), the wait time will be reset to zero again.  This has an impact on existing traffic that relies on wait points.

--Deleting track or roads

When track or roads are deleted from a route, their corresponding .tdb or .rdb files do not get deleted. Therefore when you attempt to reload a route, several dialogs appear indicating that the track database has failed to load. Deleting the .tdb or .rdb files manually fixes this.

--Reloading a re-named Activity

If you have renamed an Activity and then tried to reload it, it will not appear in the Activity list. Activities that do not appear in the Activity list cannot be run, so we recommend that you do not rename Activities.

--Murder on the Orient Express

In order to pick up the detective’s assistant, the Gölsdorf 380 locomotive, not the consist, must be near the center of Platform 3 in Zirl.

--Tokyo-Hakone route

There are several stations where the signals are placed so close to the platform that the train does not pass the signal completely when stopping. Rolling backwards at one of these stations causes the Activity to end with an "ignored red light" alert. To solve this problem try to stop at the platforms such that the end of the train has passed the signal completely. (One example of this type of station is Umegaoka Station.)

ACCESSING HELP

·            Accessing Help does not pause the game. When you press F1 or click the Help button while operating a train, the simulation does not pause. To remedy this, press the ESC key before accessing the Help.

·            Online Help: If you click the Contents button and then the ESC button, the Help does not close. All other uses of ESC work, just avoid pressing ESC after pressing the Contents button. You can also close Help with the mouse by clicking the “X” in the upper-right corner of the Help window.

TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION

For players who wish to use the unsupported editors and tools that shipped with Train Simulator, there are a number of related technical documents written by Kuju Entertainment Ltd. available as a self-extracting zip file in the techdocs folder on Train Simulator Disc 1. Like the Train Simulator Editors and Tools, these documents are not supported by Microsoft Product Support Services.

SOUND

If your sound quantity slider is set to “Low,” you will not receive either the “OK to proceed” sound or the interlocking warning buzzer. If you want to receive these sounds, set your slider to “Medium” or higher.

KIHA COUPLING ISSUE

When operating a train within the simulation, you cannot couple two KIHAs together. However, if you're creating a consist with the Activity Editor, you will be able to couple two KIHAs together.

TERRAIN EXTRACTION

·            In the Engineer’s Handbook there is a reference to the terrain extraction tool:

“This tool converts Digital Elevation Map (DEM) data into a set of terrain tiles that can be loaded into the Route Editor as the first step in creating a route.” Note that the tool does not use DEM data, but is still used to create terrain tiles.

EDITORS AND TOOLS

·            The Train Simulator Editors and Tools are NOT supported by Microsoft Product Support Services, but each application has its own Help system. While within an editor or tool, press F1 or click the Help button.

·            The Microsoft Train Simulator Editors and Tools require a desktop resolution of at least 1024 x 768 to be fully visible--dialogs do not resize for lower resolutions. This may be an issue on low-specification machines and possibly some older laptop computers.  You will be warned of the resolution requirement when you attempt to launch an editor or tool from the Train Simulator menu.

--Activity Editor

* The editor is unusable at desktop resolutions below 1024 x 768 because the dialogs do not resize for lower resolutions. This may be an issue on low speculation machines and possibly some older laptops.

* The path editor doesn't allow random modification of stretches of path because paths are intrinsically sequential. You can use path repair facilities to modify existing paths, but it is not recommended that the editor be used to remove reverse points, as the path will be compromised.

* Attempting to add a 310 tender (computer-controlled train) to the Gölsdorf 380 may cause a crash.

* Work orders: If you have a large number of action events, you may see garbled text in the work order area of the Activity Editor; however, the work order displays correctly in the Operations Notebook (press F11).

--Route Editor

* Switching the resolution freezes the Route Editor. If you attempt to change the pixel settings after launching the Route Editor, a black screen with a "PAUSE" message may display. Wait for the popup window to display with the message "This program is not responding... End Task." And choose End Task.

* Help question marks display in two dialog windows, but they are not used. These buttons appear in the two Texture Selector windows only.

* Some thumbnail graphics do not appear. These are predominately in the road and track sections headings.

* To resize siding markers do not click and drag--select the object with the F3 key and then use the left and right arrow keys to expand or contract the markers.

--Route Geometry Extractor Tool

* The zoom window feature does not zoom well into specific areas. While creating a new route and using the zoom window you may get a blank, white window.

LAPTOPS

·            Power management: Sound can be disabled when returning from standby mode back to game.  If you exit and return, sound is restored.

PATH NAMES

·            When you install Microsoft Train Simulator to a location other than the default path, be aware that the character limit is 60 characters. Going over the limit will result in error messages.

SETUP WITH WINDOWS 95, INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0 OR EARLIER

·            On a Windows 95 system that doesn't have at least Internet Explorer version 4.01 SP1, Internet Explorer 5.5 Setup launches before installing DX8 or Train Simulator. If this is the case, the Internet Explorer setup will take the user through a series of steps before allowing Train Simulator to begin its installation. This is expected behavior and will ultimately result in a successful install, so just follow the prompts.

WINDOWS 2000 LOGOFF/LOGON

·            When running Train Simulator in Windows 2000, if you lock your workstation and then log back on, the simulation will crash. To avoid this, save and exit the game before you lock your workstation.

·            When running Train Simulator in Windows 2000, if you lock your workstation and then log back on while at the Train Simulator Home screen, the screen goes black and then flickers. To avoid this, save and exit the game before you log off.

KEYBOARD STOPS RESPONDING

·            If you are running Windows 2000 and the keyboard stops responding to inputs:

1. Make sure you have DirectX 8 installed on machine. (DirectX 8 is included on the Train Simulator compact disc.)

2. If you still lose keyboard inputs from within the simulation after DX8 is installed, press ALT+TAB to temporarily exit the application, then select the application again. Keyboard inputs should be restored.

KEYBOARD REASSIGNMENTS

In the Keyboard tab of the Options screen, when you select an action item and then click the Cancel button, you will not be able to re-select your original action item key. The best way to start over is to click another item, then click the original item again. You can also press "Restore Defaults” to start again, but you will lose all other key assignments.

OVERSPEED WARNINGS

Note that an overspeed warning displays when speed is within 1 mile per hour of the posted speed limit. Safe drivers should stay 1 mph below the speed limit to avoid warnings.

VIDEO DISPLAYS AND VIDEO DRIVERS

--In many cases you'll get better video performance if you install the latest drivers from your video card manufacturer. A list of these sites is available at the Microsoft Train Simulator Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsim/info/

You can determine the manufacturer of your video card by following these steps:

  1.              Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.

  2.              Double-click System.

  3.              In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab and navigate to the section that describes your video card.

This section lists the type of video card that you have installed in your computer. For best performance, use the high color (16-bit) setting for your video resolution. Displaying more colors affects performance.

--It is recommended that you set your system’s display settings to Small Fonts to maximize viewable space in Train Simulator dialogs. Also, users of the Windows® 95 Plus! Pack or Windows® 98 who have selected Smooth edges of screen fonts in their Windows® Display settings will display smoothed fonts. If you don't have the Plus! Pack, you can download the font smoother from: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/grayscal/smoother.htm

--If you have a computer with 64MB of RAM or less, and are using video cards with 16MB or less, do not turn up the World Objects Texture Quality setting (in the Options screen) past 2 or the game may freeze up.

--The following resolutions are supported by most video cards and are available for selection (if supported):

640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024

All resolutions provided by the video card at 640 x 480 and above are supported, in 16- and 32-bit color depths.

Resolutions of 640 x 480 and below or color depths other than 16- or 32-bit are not supported.
