7 Pass Editing
1. Assembly Edit
Assemble your Audio and Video into a First Draft
The following gets added to your assembly edit
Live Video
With On-Camera Audio
Screen Capture Video
Voice Over
Animation
Slide Show Video
When you're done with your Assembly Edit, your story should have been told
In Assembly, you optimize and solve Timing, Pacing, Tempo, & Subject Matter issues
No Editorial Effects are done in Assembly
No Effects or Fancy stuff - JUST Story - "Straight Picture"
2. Hero Graphics Insert
Start Adding Additional Visual Elements
(This is where you turn up the visual pressure)
Look at your Assembly Edit and ask:
How can I enhance the pacing?
How can I make the message more concrete?
How can I demonstrate better?
Is there any confusion?
Where can I "Show" with an image vs. "Tell" with Text
How can I awe, inspire, or create emotion?
Am I constantly building towards a payoff for the viewer?

DO NOT:
Add ANY Titles
Do NOT Add Effects or Transitions
If a visual element needs finesse - Do it now
Example -
The Ken Burns effect -Taking a still image and slowly moving it through the frame
At the end of the Hero Graphics Edit
You should have
A well paced show
A visually interesting show
A show that your trusted peers could review for content purposes only
3. Title Pass
Add Titles (TEXT) and Call Outs to ENHANCE what visuals are already there
Remember, "Show", don't "Tell"
Sometimes, ideas and visuals DO need Title Support
Add Lower Thirds - Titles that Identify
On Camera Talent
Objects
Locations
Title Cards - Text that has no other images except a static background
Effective for emphasizing key points
Can be used to visually segment your acts
Use sparingly
"Supers"
Text over a moving background (Live Video)
Great for illustrating steps of a demonstration

4. Sound Spotting
This is a Research Process
Identify opportunities for
Sound Effects
Musical Stingers (Short passages of music for emphasis)
Sound Track Opportunities - As your edit develops, certain moods of music
become more obvious
"Swells" - Story Driven Opportunity to build sound
Additional Voice Over
3 Spotting Passes
Sound OFF - ANY Screen Moments (Don't Censor Yourself) where additional
audio support would enhance the MESSAGE
Stay true to the Story
Don't add just for complexities sake (Yet)
Sound ON - No Picture - Concentrate on the message that's conveyed via the audio
Look out for:
Garbled Voice Over
Pregnant Silence
Overwhelming Sound - Does a Sound Effect Fight Against the message?
Final Composite Pass - Sound and Picture Review
Time to add what you identified from the first 2 passes

5. Finesse Edit
Final Edit
Trim shots for maximum Tempo
Add SoundTrack
Just rough in the music - we'll mix it later
Add Transitions
Dissolves, Wipes, etc.
(This is what happens in-between scenes)
Add Video Effects
Color Correction
Glows
Sparkles
Etc.
6. Audio Sweetening
Add Maximum Sparkle to
Voice Over and On-Camera Audio
Musical Score
Sound Effects
Voice Over and On-Camera Audio -Add Effect
Normalize - This will maximize the overall volume without over modulating
Noise Reduction
Sample Beginning or End of Voice and add Noise Reduction Effect
You Might need to do this to an Digital Intermediate
You Export the Audio separately and add effects in a different application
I.e. Audacity or Garage Band
Compression
