HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Welcome to Half-Life® 2: Prima Official Game Guide. The following
sections reveal in detail all the necessary elements you need to
survive, thrive, and resist the Combine's assorted forces. Before you
squeeze into your HEV Suit, thoroughly digest the strategies
presented here.
OPTIONS MENU CHOICES
You have the following choices:
GAME
Difficulty: Set the Difficulty to “Easy,” “Normal,” or “Hard.”
Captioning: Select “No Captions,” “Subtitles,” or “Closed
Captions.” This is useful for the hearing-impaired.
The bulk of this guide is a walkthrough of the single-player
adventure. Each chapter has labeled maps and various additional
information boxes to further aid your progress:
Music Volume: Adjust the music from silence (0) to maximum (17)
on a 17-point sliding scale.
Game Volume: Adjust the voice and sound effects from silence (0)
to maximum (17) on a 17-point sliding scale.
Tips, Notes, and Cautions: These detail a preferred tactic (Tip), an
interesting aside (Note), or a dangerous problem (Caution) nearby.
Entity Encounter: A quick run-down of an enemy the first time you
encounter it, along with takedown tactics as applicable.
Additional Investigations: These detail key information and some
game script, along with any backstory elements.
G-Man About Town: Your sponsor is keeping a closer eye on you than
you may realize. His spying spots are revealed.
Lambda Location: Every time a member of the resistance scrawls a
lambda logo on a wall, we show you where the hidden goods are.
Inventory Adaptation: Whenever a new weapon or offensive
capability becomes available, these provide a brief description of the
item's effectiveness and usage.
THE MAIN MENU
Once you turn on your Xbox ® , you are greeted by the Game Menu
screen. Press 9 to access the Main Menu screen, or leave the
game running to watch a movie.
Adjust Brightness: Adjust the brightness from dark (0) to light (17)
on a 17-point sliding scale. Useful if you are in an overly bright or
dark room.
CONTROLLER
Look Type: Choose from “Normal” or “Inverted.” Normal means
you look up when you press i . Inverted means you look down
when you press i .
Thumbsticks: Choose from “Normal” or “Southpaw.” Normal
means g controls your movement and k controls your looking.
Southpaw reverses this, and is intended for left-handed players.
Vibration: This turns on or off your controller’s vibration feature.
Suit Zoom: Choose from “Toggle” or “Hold.” Toggle means you
press k once to use the zoom feature of your HEV Suit, and again
to zoom out. Hold means you must press and hold k for the zoom
function to occur. The former is usually preferable.
Crouch: Choose from “Toggle” or “Hold.” Toggle means you press
g once to use the zoom feature of your HEV Suit, and again to
zoom out. Hold means you must press and hold g for the zoom
function to occur. The former is almost always preferable as you
have more control.
MAIN MENU (AND IN-GAME MENU) CHOICES
Use s or g to negotiate up and down this menu. You have the
following choices:
Horizontal Look Speed: Adjust the way you look from side to side
from very slowly (0) to extremely quickly (17) on a 17-point sliding
scale.
Continue Game: Return to the current game, or your last save point.
This is known as Resume Game from the In-Game Menu.
New Game: Main Menu Only. When selected, you can begin a new
game from the start, or from the beginning of each game chapter you
have previously completed.
Save Game: In-Game Menu Only. Select “New Saved Game” in the
list to create a new file, or select a previously saved game to
overwrite a file. You can have up to 30 different saved games before
you must overwrite one.
Load Game: Select and start a previously saved game. You can have
up to 30 different saved games, or positions within a game.
Restart Map: In-Game Only. This allows you to begin a new game
instantly, if your current outing isn’t going the way you wish.
Options: Once activated, you can enter the main game options
screen.
Quit: In-Game Only. Quit out to the Main Menu. Remember to
save first!
Vertical Look Speed: Adjust the way you look up and down from
very slowly (0) to extremely quickly (17) on a 17-point sliding scale.
BUTTONS
This menu allows you to reassign any command to any button. It is
entirely up to you if you wish to attempt this, as many players feel the
default settings work well enough.
RESTORE DEFAULTS
This restores all the options to their default setting.

DIFFICULTY DEFINED
Quick descriptions of the settings are listed here, followed by detailed
comparisons of how these differences affect gameplay.
You inflict 150 percent of the damage values listed in the Weapons
Detail section of this guide.
You receive automatic aiming assistance (auto-aim).
Easy: Enemies are weak and easy to defeat.
Normal: Enemies are stronger and have basic combat skills, making
them more difficult to defeat.
Hard: Enemies have advanced combat skills, making them deadly
opponents.
Hard Comparison to Normal:
Less ammunition is available, your weapons are slightly less
powerful, and enemies are much more dangerous.
You receive 40 percent less ammunition when picking up
ammo items.
You take 150 percent of the damage listed in the Bestiary section of
this guide, except when damaged by fire, falling, drowning, physics,
poison, or sniper.
Easy Comparison to Normal:
More ammunition is available, your weapons are more powerful,
and enemies are weaker.
INTRODUCTION
You inflict 75 percent of the damage values listed in the Weapons
Detail section of this guide.
GETTING
STARTED
You receive 20 percent more ammunition when picking up
ammo items.
You receive no aiming assistance (auto-aim) from the computer.
You take one-half of the damage values listed in the Bestiary
section of this guide, except when damaged by fire, falling,
drowning, physics, poison, or sniper.
CONTROLS
These are the default controls; choose Options at the Main Menu, and
access the Controller and Buttons configuration settings.

MODIFYING STRAFING AND LOOKING
In the Options > Controller area, you can increase or decrease the
sensitivity of your strafing and looking; the higher the value, the
quicker you will sidestep or swing your head around.
If you're constantly overshooting enemies when targeting them,
try decreasing your strafing and looking.
CHAPTER 11
Once familiar with these maneuvers, experiment with the many
subtle moves you can achieve with different button and thumbstick
interactions. For example, sidestep right (h) and turn left (j) to
move away from a target in a circle.
CHAPTER 12
If you're constantly being hit before you can turn and react to an
enemy, try increasing your strafing and looking.
