Introduction
WhenIwasapproachedtowriteabookonrookandpawnendgamesIwasonlytoohappyto
oblige.Indeed,IwasreallypleasedthatIwasn’tgoingtohavetosortthroughthousandsof
recentgames,andthroughoutthebookIwouldn’tevenhavetoworryaboutlongdiagonalsor
‘L’ shapes! Yes, there’s no bishops, queens, or knights here (well, barring the odd cameo
performance!),andgenerallyspeakingthefactisthatendgametheorydoesn’treallychange.
Every now and then a computer analysis module working at a billion miles an hour and
consideringmillionsofpositionsintheblinkofaneyeoverturnsaconclusionofyesteryear,but
intruthsuchoccurrencesarerare.
Therehavebeenplentyofbookswrittenonrookendings,soIhearyouask:‘Whatmakesthis
onespecial?’Well,didIsayitwasspecial?Seriously,IliketothinkthatinthisbookIhave
coveredthemostrelevanttheoreticalpositionsandhaveusedeasyexamplestoillustratethe
mostimportantthemes.IhavealotofexperienceincoachingandIthinkIthatunderstandhow
lowerratedplayers(yes,I’mafraidIcouldbetalkingaboutyou,butdon’tworry–I’mtryingto
work on that!) tend to think when it comes to endgames. Thus I have tried to gradually
introducethereadertoeachthemeandideaandtheresultisStartingOut:RookEndgames.
Actually,thisisanappropriatetitlebecauseit’sfairtosaythatIdon’texactly‘finishoff’rook
endgames. However, this book is certainly not completely written at a basic level and
occasionallythereissomeprettyadvancedstuff.Ifyoucangetyourheadaroundthat,then
youarewellonyourwaytomasteringthetopic.
Thereisnodoubtthatrookandpawnendingsareausefulpartofthegameforeveryplayerto
gettogripswith.Ioftencriticizejuniorsforcastlingintheopeningbutthennotbotheringto
activatetheirrooksinthemiddlegame.Theirassumptionalwaysseemstobethattheminor
pieceswilldobattleearlyon,andifthegameisstillgoing,thentherookswillcomeouttoplay
later.Ofcoursetheyshouldbetryingtocreate‘pawnbreaks’fromtheopeningonwardsin
ordertoactivatethetenpointsworthoffirepower,butsometimesit’sliketalkingtoabrick
wall!PerhapsI’mbeingabitharsh,butthefactstillremainsthatatlowerlevelsrooksare
generallyunderachieversinthemiddlegameand,withthisnonconfrontationalapproach,they

arenaturallythesurvivors.Hencerookendingstendtobethemostcommonendgametypeto
arise.
By the way, that’s just single rook endings (or rook versus pawns). I haven’t said much on
doublerookendgames,partlybecausetheyaresorareandpartlybecausethesameprinciples
apply,buttwofold!Jokingaside,theoneassumptionIhavemadeforthisbookisthatthe
readerknowshowtodelivercheckmatewithakingandrookagainstabareking.Withtwo
rooksapiecethemaindifferenceisthatthepartnershipisabletodelivercheckmatewithout
the aid of its monarch. They provide twice as much firepower and thus frequently enjoy
doublingontheseventhrankandopenfiles.Regardingthelatter,that’swheremoretypically
onepairisexchangedoff,thusreturningtotherealmsofthisbook.
ThereisafamoussayingthatIhaverefrainedfromusinginthemainbodyofthisbookandthat
isthat‘allrookendingsaredrawn’.Thisgeneralizationishighlydubious,butasyouworkyour
way through the chapters you will begin to understand its basis. The fact is that, next to
oppositecolouredbishopendings,yourbestchanceforashareofthepointswhenyouarea
pawndownisinarookendgame.Indeed,thatisreflectedinthemanyexamplesthatIusein
whichthedefendersalvagesadrawthankstoactiveplayandoverallemploymentofthebasic
ideasIputforward.It’sprobablytruethatthemajorityofrookendingsdofinishasdrawsbut
it’sonething‘knowingthat’andanother‘knowinghowto’!
AndatthispointIsuggestthatyou‘getknowing’!Pleaseworkyourwaythroughthebookand
uponcompletionyouwillbearmedwiththerequiredtechniquestohandlerookandpawn
endgames.Thenyoucanstartoutinsomethingelse!
