many players have no time to read
numerous chess books, here we have
done it instead of them. The book
contains a review of all the variations
that the white can choose ater the
introductoy l.e4 - e6 and, according
to our opinion, also the best and the
most modern responses for the black;
and in our match reviews, we have
also tried to show other methods for
black igures.
Why we have decided for the
French defence? - Because it offers
many possibilities to the black in the
fight to equalize, and it is often
suficiently complicated that one an
even try to win. The French defence
an be said to lead to a complex
maneuver and we reommend it to
the players ith a developed sense of
position and stratey. The play goes
on most often by the white, still in the
opening, taking surplus spae in the
King's side and the black develops the
Queen's side and there he asks for
ounter play. The main problem of
the black position is the white bishop
which an remain undeveloped and,
in the ending, it an ase failure, but
if the black solves the problem of the
bishop, there should not be any more
greater problems.
French defene was implemented
by the old-time players Gea Marocy
(he was the first), then Chigorin,
hrrasch, Nimzowich, and also by our
contemporaries Botvinnik, Uhlmann,
Va ganian and Korchnoi from the
"older" generation, and presently by
Bareev, Dreev, Tiviakov, ...

This book has been created so as
to help the raders to master the
French defence. Everybody knows
that chess theory has been
signifiantly developed, so that
without endeavor and theoretial
preparation, a chess player has almost
no chance at any tournament.
