Opening Highlights
Bobby Fischer
The great American champion did not survive his last
fight. In his 'Corner', Genna Sosonko goes back to
Bobby's glory days and looks at his broad and practical
opening repertoire. From sharp Sicilians to quiet Ruy
Lopezes and gritty King's Indians, Fischer played them all
with his characteristic vigour. This special issue contains
lots of inside information about how the Soviets
viewed the homework of their Nemesis (page 26).
Teimour Radjabov
In Yearbook 82 we hailed the Azeri star as the new champion
of the King's Indian. Now Radjabov has embarked on an even
riskier venture: the Jaenisch Variation in the Ruy Lopez. As
Alexey Kuzmin relates on page 108, it looked like a one-off
surprise in the World Cup, where Teimour lost to Macieja with
it. But since he used this venerable opening to keep the likes of
Anand, Carlsen and Topalov at bay, it can't be that bad!
Vasily lvanchuk
Now Vasily lvanchuk's 14.�e6!! cannonball in the 6.�c4
Najdorf .. . that's something we can call a one-off surprise.
The Amber game with Karjakin is so striking that it deserves
a Survey on its own. Correspondence grandmaster Juan
Morgado holds the game under a magnifying glass on page
36, using an even finer tooth comb than John Nunn did in
New In Chess. The theoretical implications of this line will
be treated in Yearbook 88.
Carsten Hansen
The amiable Dane is known for his thorough
investigations into opening theory on numerous
authoritative websites. His deep research into the
often-neglected territory of the English Four Knights
Variation, started in Yearbook 86, continues on page
226 with an old Kortchnoi ploy that may become
popular again. After you've read this, your 'English' will
be up to scratch for years to come!
