Two key measures are available to help match your
business protection needs to the optimal solution. The
first, recovery time objective (RTO), is the amount of
time your business can tolerate a business process
being down. The second, the recovery point objective
(RPO), is the amount of data you can afford to lose.
For 24x7 applications, the RPO could be the most
recent transaction; for file servers, it could be last
night’s backup.

Selecting the right solution
To plan your data protection solution appropriately, you
must first understand the type of technology environment
that you are running. Consider the following:
Direct attached storage (DAS):
Tape autoloaders:

management and the backup process, tape
autoloaders are ideal for companies that:
Want to avoid risks associated with changing
tapes manually
Have outgrown standalone tape drives
The simplest backup
and restore environment, DAS usually consists of a
standalone tape drive or an autoloader attached
directly to the server that it is protecting. Businesses
that operate DAS usually require backups only daily
and/or weekly, maintain only a few (one or two)
networked servers on each network and do not use
online business-critical operations.

Have RTOs of hours to days
For consistent, automated backup
of large volumes of data (without the need for
specialized resources or time-consuming processes),
tape libraries provide a perfect solution. They
are simple to manage, fit easily into multi-vendor
environments, work well in LANs or SANs, and are
equipped with intelligent tools to streamline backups
and simplify management.
LAN- and SAN-based backup
storage uses devices that are managed centrally
from a single console through a single backup
server, reducing hardware costs, and management
time. Businesses that operate LAN-/SAN-based
backup usually require continuous, business-critical
operations as well as hourly or daily backups; have
three or more networked servers; and run multiple
operating systems.
HP StorageWorks tape-based solutions
The unique characteristics of tape make it the foundation
of a solid data protection strategy. Small and portable,
tape storage allows you to keep backup copies of your
data offsite, giving you protection against site-wide
disasters, virus attacks, or equipment failures. Tape’s low
cost and long media life also make it an effective means
of long-term data archival.
HP StorageWorks solutions are
blade-ready
Exclusive to HP BladeSystem c-Class enclosures, HP
StorageWorks tape blades provide an integrated data
protection solution for enclosures not connected to a
SAN, such as remote offices. These tape blades fit right
into your HP BladeSystem c-Class enclosures, offering
you direct backup of the adjacent server blade with
network backup capability for all other storage residing
within the enclosure.
You can also connect the HP BladeSystem to external
iSCSI, SAS, and Fibre Channel connected disk and
tape backup solutions when you wish to consolidate
the backup of multiple servers for improved
performance and capacity.
HP StorageWorks offers a full range of tape-based
solutions, including:
Tape drives:
DAT drives, which are ideal for entry-level
business protection needs and combine proven
reliability with a low cost of ownership
LTO Ultrium drives, both half- and full-height; the
former offer simple integration into available bays
inside workstations and servers while retaining
the capacity of traditional full-height drives,
and the latter combine a rugged design with
outstanding performance
