A: I’m so glad you can come. We’ll finally meet and talk.

B: Yes, I’m looking forward to it. But I’m just a bit worried as it’s my first time in the USA and I’d like to ask if you could pick me up from the airport.

A: Oh, yeah. I’ll find out about your flight and I’ll be in the arrival lounge.

B: Thank you so much. But I have just realized that you haven’t got any recent photographs of me, so how will you recognize me? I don’t have any pictures to send you by e-mail.

A: Good point. So, what do you look like?

B: I’m about 175 centimetres tall, I have long blond hair and I’m rather slim.

A: OK. And would it be possible for you to tell me now what you will be wearing?

B: It’s hard to say, but most probably a green T-shirt and blue jeans. And how will I recognize you? I may have problems even if I know your face from the pictures that you sent me three years ago.

A: Well, I haven’t changed much. I have an idea. Just in case, I’ll have a piece of paper with your name on it. Just look for it in the crowd.

B: That’s a great idea. Thank you so much.

A: Is there anything else you would like to talk about before you come?

B: No, I think we’ve talked about everything for now. See you in two days’ time then. And again, thank you very much.

/Rozmowę rozpoczyna zdający/

A:  You know, a funny thing happened to me in the afternoon.

B: What happened?

A: I was on a park bench reading a newspaper when a very strange person appeared. First I heard dogs barking and when I looked I saw a woman walking towards me. She had four dogs with her [and she kept each of them firmly on a leash]. I think she looked crazy.

B: Why?

A: She was about 60 or 70 years old. She had long grey hair and was very thin. She only had a nightdress on…

B: A nightdress?!

A: At least I thought it was a nightdress. [And she was wearing an unbuttoned fur coat over it.] On her feet she had bedroom slippers.

B: This is very funny indeed. And what did you do?

A: She stopped in front of my bench and asked, “Do you mind if I sit here?” I said that I didn’t and she sat at the other end with the dogs around her feet. She didn’t say a word. I looked around and I saw that nobody was paying attention. It was very strange. It was early afternoon and the park was full of people.

B: And how did that finish?

A: Nothing happened. After 10 or 15 minutes she left. I wanted to laugh so hard that I couldn’t read any more.

B: Who do you think she was?

A: I think she was someone who lived near the park and just wanted to walk her dogs when she woke up.

B: Yes, that’s possible. But it was a funny incident, I must say.

A: Oh, yes. I will never forget her. It was so strange.

C.    Negocjowanie

A: So, how shall we select these two representatives? I suggest we choose two responsible pupils with very good grade, who are creative and intelligent.

B: Ok, but those good pupils may not be creative and intelligent. Why not organize a sort of competition? In this way we could see them in action, how they cooperate, what sort of ideas they have and so on.

A: That is a very good idea, but in my opinion it may not work. It takes a lot of time. Besides, it is very difficult to think of a task for them. You know, we start the camp very soon and we won’t have time for that. And there are fifty of them. I must say I can’t imagine having a competition of this kind for fifty people.

B: OK, I see. You are right. What do you think we should do? Choose them randomly?

A: No, I don’t think it’s a good idea. But you are right, we could choose them, but in a different way. Why not ask them to elect two representatives from among themselves. First, they can give the names of any people they want, and then vote for two. They know one another, because they are from one school. In this way they could be responsible for the representatives and they would like them to be really good.

B: Yes. I like that. We could also ask them to elect one girl and one boy. Then no one would be angry that we favour any group.

A: Let’s do it then.

Zadanie 2 Rozmowa na podstawie ilustracji

In the picture I can see a man who is celebrating his birthday somewhere in the forest. It is dark. He is lying on the ground [to the right of the picture]. He is in his sleeping bag [which is blue, and it is on a red blanket on the ground.] He has dark hair and glasses, and he is dressed in a white T-shirt. The man is smiling at the camera. It must be a very warm summer evening. Behind him I can see a green bag or rucksack and, slightly to the left of the picture, a pot and next to it a thermos flask on a piece of rock. In the foreground of the picture there is a small blue plastic box with a small yellow and red piece of cake on it. On top of the cake there is the number 33 with one candle. It is clear that the man is celebrating his birthday while he is camping in the forest.

1. Is the man celebrating his birthday alone or not? Why do you think so?

It seems that the man is alone, but it’s impossible, because somebody is taking the picture of him [smiling and lying in his sleeping bag]. There is probably only one more person with him. It may be his girlfriend or wife. They are celebrating his birthday while they are on holiday together.

2. How do you celebrate your birthday?

I celebrate my birthday with my family and friends, never alone. It is a happy day for me. My family usually has a surprise for me. Sometimes it is a meeting with somebody I like very much but I haven’t seen for a long time. Once it was my uncle, who lives in the USA. But last year my mother prepared a huge birthday cake for me and hid a small packet inside it. It was an MP3 player that I wanted to have for a long time. I like my birthdays very much.
