Introduction
Inthepastfewyearsvideoandcomputertechnologieshaveadvancedin
their own directions and at the same time they have converged. Video
camerasandequipmenthavebeenmakinguseofcomputertechnologies
and computers like the Amiga have been getting closer and closer to
video standards. Twenty years ago it was rare to find a computer in
someone's home andjust as rare to find video equipment there. Now,
it's not uncommon forpeople to own both.
Ifyou own an Amiga and a VCR you have the beginnings ofa video
production studio. Already you have more power than full-blown
broadcast stations had a few decades ago. With a few extra pieces of
equipment you can blend thepowerofthecomputerwith yourVCR to
produceprofessional results. With the right software you can produce
titles,graphics,even sophisticatedcomputer-generatedanimations.
It was once said that the personal computer was a solution looking for
aproblem. Ifyou could find something thatacomputercoulddobetter
than a pencil and piece of paper then you could make a fortune. It
happenedwiththespreadsheet,wordprocessoranddatabase.Computers
could also play certain kinds ofgames, help musicians and artists, and
you just can't do telecommunications without a computer. Since
computers are naturals at manipulating text someone came up with the
idea of using a computer to generate professional quality printed
documents. Thatwas the startofdesktoppublishing.
From the beginning, people in the Amiga community have been told
that the Amiga is the perfectcomputer for video. Itgenerates a nearly
perfect video signal, has graphic capabilities farbeyond otherPCs and
it is inexpensive. The term Desktop Video was coined pretty much as
marketing hype by people trying to capitalize on the Desktop
Publishing boom. Buteven ifthe term came from some PR executive,
it also communicates an idea. That anyone can use the Amiga for a
multitudeofvideopurposes.
Ifyou are acomputerperson, then you know thatyou don't have to be
an assembly languageprogrammertogetresults. Thereareahandfulof
basics that you need to learn and once you have those you can do
amazing things with a computer. The same is true for video. You don't
needawaveform monitorandvectorscopeto shootabirthdaypartybut
to getgoodresults youneed to understanda few things aboutvideo. To
make desktop video a reality you need some understanding of both
