We are experiencing a new Anand Era. In October the
Indian super player definitely quashed Vladimir Kramnik's
world title aspirations in Bonn. For no small part this was
thanks to the
brilliant and complex new line in the
Meran Slav
with which the Indian champion beat
Kramnik twice, prolonging his world reign and creating a
new craze in the Meran in the process. Read the Survey

This new Azeri star ascended to the world elite this year.

Grandmaster Zakhartsov is the winner of various strong
round-robins in the Ukraine and a staunch contender in the
Russian First League. His Survey on page 43 features
Zakhartsov's exploits in the hottest Najdorf Poisoned
Pawn line,
updating Emanuel Berg's in Yearbook 83. In our
Forum Section the 40-year-old Rostov-on-Donian also writes
