When we set out to write this book, our intention was
to design a text which would be useful for all nurses,
irrespective of the context of their practice, but especially
so for undergraduate nursing students. We invited
colleagues teaching and working in mental health to
contribute from the breadth of their expertise, and we
wrote specifically for an Australian and New Zealand
readership, addressing topics such as local legislation
and policy—topics absent from the overseas texts on
which we have traditionally relied.
The text is divided into four parts. Briefly, Part 1
explores broad areas such as the history of mental illness
and mental health care, the nurse, contexts of practice
and the politico-legal implications of practice. Part 2
aims to contextualise practice, examining theories
about mental health and wellness across the lifespan
and within societies and cultures, as well as exploring
crisis, loss and assessment issues. Part 3 develops a better
understanding of the major mental illnesses, examines
DSM-IV-TR diagnoses, interventions and effective treat-
ments, and examines the client's experience of mental
illness. Part 4 focuses on psychopharmacology and
therapeutic skill development for practice, and applies
skills to clinical situations.
Chapters begin with key points, key terms and learn-
ing outcomes, and conclude with questions and exercises
to facilitate teaching and learning. Critical thinking
challenges, class engagement activities, nurses' stories,
case studies and research briefs encourage an active
awareness of the complex issues related to mental health
and illness.
Most chapters incorporate 'nurse's story' vignettes,
illustrating the knowledge possessed by practising psychi-
atric mental health nurses, and to give students insight
into the world of practice. We editors were hospital-
trained and we fear that much of the concentrated, prac-
tical and interpersonal skills and knowledge that
enhanced our own training could be lost as the nursing
workforce ages and leaves the profession. Contributions
from nurses working in clinical and management roles as
well as nurse academics communicate skills in coun-
selling, assessment, interviewing, history taking and a
range of interventions.
This text acknowledges the importance of a client-
focused approach and supports a holistic philosophy of
practice. This holistic approach assists the beginning
practitioner to understand that mental wellness is a
concept that balances mental illness, and that mental
illness is caused by a complex web of circumstances.
A healthy society requires that mental health needs are
acknowledged and services developed to enhance the
existing protective factors in our communities.
We hope that this text will have a wide appeal because
of its practical approach and the support it offers
students and teachers as well as all practitioners working
with those who have a mental health problem. In an
environment where technical and professional evolution
is continuous and inevitable, we wanted above all to
stress the importance of a personal and humane approach
to psychiatric mental health nursing practice.
