QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY

individual work
Focus : vocabulary connected with royalty: feminine
and masculine nouns for regal titles, reading skills,
speaking skills
Level : pre-intermediate - intermediate
Time : 35-40 minutes

Preparation : Photocopy students’ worksheets:
Worksheet 1 - one per student, Worksheet 2 – one
per student or enough for each of the three groups,
so that the students can easily read the quiz
questions. Prepare a list of answers to the quiz, but
in a random order. Photocopy them (one per group,
i.e. 3 copies). Find photos of royal family members
on the internet (choose popular ones – the Queen,
Prince Charles and Camilla, his sons, perhaps Diana
and Kate Middleton), print them out and bring them
to the lesson.

3. Distribute Worksheet 2. Divide the students into
three groups. Ask each group to choose a name
(e.g. counts, dukes, kings). Tell them that they
are going to solve a quiz concerning the royal
family. Prepare lists of answers in case the
students need help. Explain that if they can
provide answers without help, they can get
2 points for each question. If they decide that
they need help, they get a list of answers and
have to match them to the questions, but they
can only get 1 point for each question. Give the
groups 7-8 minutes to work on the quiz. Then
check their answers and award points.
Procedure:
1. Show photos of different members of the royal
family. Ask the students if they recognize the
people. Introduce the topic of the lesson – the
Queen’s double birthday and the royal family.
2. Distribute Worksheet 1. Tell the students to
complete the table with the correct words – either
feminine or masculine nouns and their Polish
equivalents. After 2-3 minutes allow the students
to compare their answers and check as a class.
Focus on the differences in meaning between
some of the titles, e.g.:
prince – a descendant of royal blood, who can
potentially become a king
duke – lower in position than prince, but a prince
can also be a duke (e.g. Prince William is the Duke
of Cambridge)
Sir(Knight)/Lady/Dame – the title given e.g. to
artists for public service

4. Tell the students that they are going to prepare
30-second speeches to answer the question: What
would you tell the Queen if you met her on her
birthday? Give the students one minute to prepare
bullet points with information they would like to
include in their speeches. Ask the students to
work in groups of 4 and take turns to present their
speeches. Monitor the activity and note down the
most interesting ideas. Discuss them as a whole
class.
