STARTING OFF

1.     Vocabulary

Tell the students that you are going to talk about winter sports. Hand out one holiday advert (A,B, C or D) to each pair of students. Give each student a copy of the vocabulary sheet (or ask them to copy this into their notebooks). Tell students to go through their advert and find as many vocabulary items as possible for their vocabulary sheet.

Now put the students into groups of four so that there is an A,B,C and D in each group. The students tell each other the vocabulary that they found and complete their vocabulary sheets.

Elicit all the vocabulary and go through the meanings of each where necessary.

2.     Personalisation

Ask the students to work in their groups of four and try to say which or the four holidays sounds the most and least interesting. They discuss this together giving their reasons. Elicit ideas in open class.

Write the following sentence beginnings on the board. Ask the students to write them down and complete them so that they are true for them about winter sports. If they can’t make a true sentence using any of the stems, they should change them so that they are true (e.g I don’t often go..) If they have never been skiing, they can replace questions 4-6 with similar questions about ice-skating or tobogganing.

1.       I often/never/sometimes go skiing

2.       I’d like to go…

3.       I don’t want to try…

4.       I’ve skied in …

5.       The best skiing holiday I’ve ever had was in…

6.       The best / worst thing about skiing is…

3.     Decide your perfect winter holiday

Write the following headings on the board:

Sport:

Country:

Place to stay (hotel, apartment, hostel etc)

Travel by (coach, plane, car etc)

Evening activities (swimming pool, discos, quiet town etc)

A good place for (young people, families, beginners etc)

Tell students to work alone and to write their own ideas.

4.     Sell your holiday

Students work in pairs, A and B. A is a customer in a travel agents. B is trying to sell his/her perfect holiday. They should make it sound as exciting as possible. Tell the students to think of questions they might want to ask (How much is the holiday? What food do I get? etc)

When finished, A and B swap roles.

5.     Make a poster

Students in pairs choose one of their ideas from the last activity and produce a poster advertising the holiday giving the main details. These are then displayed so that students can see them all and decide which is the best one.
