  Basic Cast-on Stitch

This stitch adds wonderful dimension!  Brazilian by nature, it is highly adaptable to many variations.  Different threads, placement and number in the grouping can all  be varied to create stunning results.

Cast-on Stitch - Fig. 1

1. Begin by bringing thread up at A.

Insert needle tip at B and out again at A, pushing the needle through so that just the eye remains topside at B. Wrap thread across front of pointer finger and around the back of it to form a loop (as in knitting). Insert the tip of the needle into the loop, remove your finger, and pull the loop down to the base of the needle (at A).

Cast-on Stitch - Fig. 2

2. Continue adding Cast-on stitches until you have the required number.

Hold the stitches on the needle flat to the fabric with thumb topside and index finger underneath, and pull the needle through and away from you until all of the thread is through the Cast-on loops

Cast-on Stitch - Fig. 3

3. Slowly pull the needle/thread toward you and slide the Cast-on wrap down the remaining thread toward B.

Insert needle at B and pull all thread through the fabric. Give a firm tug on the thread to "set" it.

This completes one Cast-on section

  Cast-on Stitch - Carnation:

Cast-on Stitch - Fig. 4

4. Begin at the top right side of the point where your carnation will be.

Work the 1st section as shown in stitch instruction, then work the 2nd section centered over the end point of the first (shown as 2). Work the 3rd section centered over the end of the 2nd section (shown as 4).

Cast-on Stitch - Fig. 5

5.   Begin the 2nd row below the center of section 1 of Row 1.

Work 2nd section of Row 2 centered over the end point of section 1.

6. To complete the flower, work one section below Row 2, centered over the two sections.

  Carnation Greenery:

Cast-on Stitch - Fig. 6

Work Satin stitch the width of the 3rd Row section in a triangular shape. Make a running stitch line for the stem, then whipstitch it to finish. Add two bullion stitch leaves as shown, using a tacking stitch over the bullion to keep it in position.

  Cast-on Stitch - Cable

Cast-On Stitch - Cable

This variation is a personal favorite!

In this example, the stitch is worked overlapping (see Cast-on Carnation - Step 1) in a line along a seam on a Crazy Quilt piece.  The finished line takes on the appearance of a cable.

  Cast-on Stitch - Scallops

Cast-on Stitch - Scallops

In these examples, the Cast-on Stitches are worked side by side, along the seam, and a bead has been stitched into the center.

Lazy Daisy (Basic)

This versatile stitch can be worked in a number of ways to achieve different results.

Lazy Daisy - Fig. 1

Bring needle and ribbon topside.  Insert needle as shown & wrap the ribbon around the needle tip, bringing remaining ribbon down at the right side.  Pull the needle through.

Lazy Daisy - Fig. 2

Finish off with a straight stitch or a ribbon stitch (as shown) at the tip

Lazy Daisy (Decorative)

Lazy Daisy - Decorative

Complete a basic Lazy Daisy stitch, then use a complimentary or contrasting colour to the center, coming up at the base and down just inside & below the loop.

Lazy Daisy (Bullion Tip)

Lazy Daisy - 1 & 2 Wraps

Here is a side by side comparison of the 1 & 2 wrap bullion tips.

Lazy Daisy (Bullion Tip) - One Wrap

Begin as with a regular Lazy Daisy, but at the top of the needle, take the ribbon behind it, come back over and behind the needle again (1 wrap made).  Bring the ribbon to lay down the right side.

Hold the bullion tip wrap between thumb (on top) and index finger (below) and pull the needle through.

Lazy Daisy - Bullion Tip - One Wrap

Finish at the top with a straight stitch or ribbon stitch (shown) at the tip.

This example shows 1 wrap.

Lazy Daisy (Bullion Tip) - Two Wraps

This sample shows 2 wraps.  You can make a longer tip on the stitch by adding more wraps.

The Melanie Rose

The success of this stitch depends on maintaining a loose tension on the ribbon. Allow the center stitches to have extra fullness. Allow the Japanese stitches to roll at the edges. Leave generous loops on the Rolled Stem stitches. Begin with a 12" length of ribbon for smaller blooms, and 14" for larger blooms.

7mm ribbon requires 20" - 24"respectively.

Melanie Rose - Fig. 1

First Layer:
Straight Stitches

Work 1 stitch at center, 3/8"for smaller bloom, or ½" for larger bloom . Work 2nd stitch 1/8" up from bottom, work left to right, taking ribbon down beside end of first. Work 3rd stitch opposite 2nd , right to left, with down point beside center

Melanie Rose - Fig. 2

Second Layer:
Japanese Ribbon Stitches
Work three stitches:

1st - at center - take needle down through the straight stitch, just below tip of the stitch.

2nd - bottom left to top right, going down parallel to end of 1st Japanese stitch.

3rd - bottom right to top left, end parallel to 1st

Melanie Rose - Fig. 3

Rolled Ribbon Stem Stitch - 1st row:

Bring ribbon up just left of the last stitch. Roll the needle between thumb and finger 3 times clockwise. Work 5 stem stitches as shown.

Melanie Rose - Fig. 4

Rolled Ribbon Stem Stitch - 2nd row:

Take ribbon up at ½ way point of 1st Stem stitch, and work 4 stem stitches beneath 1st row as shown.

Melanie Rose - Fig. 5

Push the Rolled Stem stitches upward from base, and use blunt needle end to adjust inner stitches by lifting upward / outward.

Rose Base & Stem:
Work satin stitch in area shown. Work stem stitch (or whipped backstitch) along the line to be the stem.

Melanie Rose - Fig. 6
