If you’re a regular reader, you may have noticed that the magazine has grown a little bigger
this month. If you’re a new reader, then welcome to our new, bigger magazine! Either way, we
hope you enjoy the new size magazine as much as the old!
Of course, a bigger magazine means bigger pictures and we couldn’t wait to see how photographer Ben
Watts’s images looked when laid out. Ben brings his personal passions into all of his commercial work,
and is always being commissioned to create the kind of images that express who he is, so he must be doing
something right! Find out how he does it in Maximum Watts on page 50.
Don McCullin is as passionate a photographer as you are ever likely to meet and his images are just
as strong a personal statement as Ben’s, but they exist within two separate universes. I’m lucky enough
to have commissioned Don in the past, and knew that if we were going to interview him we needed to get beneath the surface
of the man and bring you something very different. Read what he has to say in The Survivor on page 56. I think we
succeeded and I hope you agree. It’s powerful stuff.
With the art schools, universities and colleges filled with potential professional photographers preparing to be
unleashed on the marketplace, we look at some of the important issues changing the landscape of professional
photography in 2010 in our Student Special . We ask whether students are
prepared for the real world when they leave education in What’s Next?
on page 31, and whether too many students are hoping to become
photographers in University Challenge on page 84.
We take a look at one of the major growth areas in photography today:
live music work. Downloading music and images has sparked a revolution in
this genre, which we address in Rock ‘n’ Roll Download on page 64.
In the same way that technology has changed the face of the music business, the emergence of the
fashion blogger has changed the world of fashion photography. The continued growth of websites which
feature fashion moments captured on the street has quickly infiltrated into editorial and advertising fashion work,
leading to a new ‘believable’approach to the fashion image. Find out more in Street Life
on page 78.
More and more young photographers are being drawn to travel/reportage work, so we
decided to ask Glaswegian photojournalist Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert how he got started and
how his career has developed now that he is based inTokyo in Big in Japan on page 72.
One of the hardest things to learn when you first start out is how to deal with clients.
This can be even more difficult if the client is as inexperienced as you are! Wedding
photographer Crash Taylor takes up the challenge and tells you the right way to go in The Hitch
Pitch on page 87.
Although it carries a hefty price tag out of most students’ reach, we decided that the recent launch of
the Canon 1D MkIV demanded a serious review workout, so we sent it out to shoot some rugby in the hands
of a veteran Canon sports photographer. Hear what he has to say in Premier League on page 92.
In print, online, via iTunes and on Facebook every day of every month, we try our hardest to make sure you have
a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift. It’s a tough task, but we think we’re big enough to do it.
