A I’ll be sixteen next month. I'd like to have a party at home and invite all my friends, but I don't want my parents to be at home then. Last night, I asked my parents about the party. They said I could have a party but they would stay at home.

I'm really unhappy now. The party will be a disaster if my parents are in the house. We won't do anything wrong at the party, but we won't be able to relax and enjoy ourselves if they are at home. How can I make my parents understand?

Helen

B I've got a problem at school and I don't know what to do about it. I'm good at Maths and I always get high marks for my homework. Two of the other boys in the class wait for me before school starts and take my homework book. Then they copy the Maths homework. The worst thing is that they write and draw in my homework book and the teacher gets angry with me because my book is dirty and untidy. I don't want to tell my parents because it’ll be worse for me if they complain to the head teacher. What can I do?

Andrew

C My parents are very nice but they are quite old-fashioned. I'm 13. I want to choose my own clothes but my mother always goes shopping with me. She never lets me buy what I want. My friends make fun of me because I don' t wear fashionable clothes. They don't ask me to go out with them at weekends and they never invite me to parties. B: Read about Philip Rogers’ life and circle the correct answers: a, b or c.

Meet our teachers

www.englishstudyschool.co.uk

Philip Rogers started teaching in 1992 and came to our school in 1994. He was born in 1960 in England and doesn’t remember much of the 1960’s. He wasn’t interested in football then and didn’t see England win the World Cup in 1966. The first big news story that he remembers is when the Americans landed on the moon in 1969.

In the 1970’s, Philip remembers holidays in Cornwall. He stayed with his aunt in a house with a beautiful view of the sea and a busy harbour. His aunt had a boat and they often went sailing and sometimes they caught fish. He swam every day and ate lots of Cornish ice cream.

In 1978, Philip went to university in Oxford. He was quite shy and didn’t like living there at first. Later he made some friends and liked living in Oxford. He started going to football matches and concerts. He liked going to a place called ‘The Oranges and Lemons’. He saw lots of bands there but he didn’t see anyone famous because it was a very small place.

After university, Philip went to live in London. This was in the 1980’s and Philip now hates looking at photos of this time. Clothes and haircuts in the 1980’s were very strange! He didn’t have a good job. It was difficult to find work. He worked in a burger bar on a train station. He liked the job but he had to get up at 5 o’clock because he started work at 6 in the morning. He liked living in London but he didn’t live in the centre. He lived in a place called Tottenham in North London.

In 1988, he left London and went to America. He went in October and came home in December. It was a great time. He travelled all over the country but he didn’t sleep in hotels. He travelled at night by bus and slept on the bus. His favourite place was New York. He loved the big city and the smell of food everywhere.

Now he is married and has two children. He is a teacher and he likes to remember when he was young.
