1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This Community Development proile is intended to help the community, elected repre-
sentatives, service providers and government agencies better understand the diverse
nature of Banana Shire and the possible social, economic and environmental issues they
may face now and in the future.
1.2 Methodology
The Banana Shire Council identiied that a strategic Community Development Planning
project is required in all of the Shire’s eleven towns. This will give us the best chance of
reversing current population losses and guide us to realise our great community and eco-
nomic growth potential.
In summation, the consultation process included:
Gathering and referral to available ABS statistics.
Discussion of related issues and policy with Government Departments and key stake-
holder representatives.
Meetings with representatives from regional organisations that have economic devel-
opment roles.
Attendance at meetings, networking or speaking to local leaders and community
groups.
Research/referral to a variety of historical literature.
Research/referral to a variety of regional strategic planning/consultancies currently in
progress.
A Community Survey to residents in the Council.
Related Internet research.

2 Location
The small township of Cracow is located
154km south-east of Biloela, 259km
south of Rockhampton and 475km
north-west of Brisbane.
2.1 History
Cracow (named after the Polish city)
was once a prosperous gold mining
town. Gold was discovered in 1850,
with the Golden Plateau N.L. Company
operating the mine from 1936 to 1976.
The town has recently been given a new
lease of life with the re-opening of the
gold mine, in 2003.
2.2 Description
Much of the township of Cracow can be
enjoyed on foot by taking a “walk tour”
of the deserted buildings in the main
street including the deserted hospital.
You can also view the cemetery, many
shops and enjoy the country hospitality
of the hotel with its display of memora-
bilia.
