A Nutritional Checklist
Directions: You will be looking at a variety of canned or packaged food items. By reading the
“Nutritional Facts” section of these items and answering the questions below, determine
whether or not the item is healthy--and should be incorporated into one’s diet— or
unhealthy--and should be eaten sparingly.
1.
Is the food item a substantial source of protein ?
2.
Does it contain carbohydrates ? How many grams ?
3.
Does it contain a considerable amount of vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin A, C, D,
B-6, B-12, Iron, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Calcium, Folic Acid, Phosphorus,
Magnesium, Zinc and Copper )? How much of a recommended percentage daily value of
each vitamin and mineral does the product contain?
4.
Is the product high in cholesterol ? Saturated fat ? Sodium ?
5.
Is the products high in calories ? How many calories come from fat ?
6.
How many grams of dietary fiber does it contain?
7.
How many grams of sugar does it contain?
8.
Look at the ingredients section. Is oil, butter or salt a primary ingredient (listed in the first 2 or
3 ingredients)?
9.
How would you generally prepare this food item (oven; pan-fry; deep fry)?
10. What might you serve with this food item to create a relatively healthy meal or snack?
11. Is this food item something you would feel good about eating often?
