Friendship Shawl

This shawl pattern was created to raise funds for Shelterbox ( www.shelterbox.org ) .

Shelterbox is a charity based in Cornwall, UK, which responds instantly to natural
and man-made disasters worldwide by delivering boxes of aid to those who are most
in need . Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and
essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless.
Shawl knitted in YarnAddict Organic Merino 4ply
Notes:
This shawl is worked in two halves and then grafted together at the end. It is worked in garter
stitch throughout and features a pretty lace border. It is easy to substitute the yarn. The sample is
knitted in 4ply/fingering weight yarn but any yarn weight can be used. Adjust the needle size to
suit your yarn and knit the first half until you've used up half your yarn, then repeat for the second
half.
Needed:
200 gr 4ply/fingering weight yarn or sock yarn
4mm/US6 circular needles (straight needles can be used if preferred)
stitch marker
blunt sewing needle
stitch holder or waste yarn
Abbreviations:
k – knit
st(s) – stitch(es)
yo – yarn over (yarn forward)
pm – place marker
sm – slip marker
ndl(s) – needle(s)
rep - repeat
kw – knitwise
pw - purlwise

Pattern:
Cast on 4 sts.
R1: k1, yo, pm, work chart
R2: work chart, sm, work rest of row
RS rows: k to marker, yo, sm, work chart
WS rows: work chart, sm, k to end
Work set up chart once, then work main chart as many times as required.
Continue working as established until you have 110 sts before the marker or until you've used up
half your yarn. Make sure you have finished a full repeat of the main chart. Place all sts on a stitch
holder or waste yarn.
Rep for second half of shawl.
Grafting:
When both halves are finished, place sts back on ndls. Hold ndls parallel to each other so that the
borders match. Graft pieces together as follows:
*Insert sewing ndl into first st on front ndl kw and slip this st off the ndl. Insert the sewing ndl into
the next st on the front ndl pw and leave this st on the ndl. Insert sewing ndl into first st on the
back ndl kw and slip this st off the ndl. Insert the sewing ndl into the next st on the back ndl pw
and leave this st on the ndl. Rep from * until all sts are grafted tog.
Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends. Soak shawl until thoroughly wet. Squeeze out excess water by rolling
shawl up in a towel. Lay shawl on a flat surface and stretch out to size and pin in place, make sure
you pull out the points of the border and pin these in place. Leave to dry. Unpin when dry.
