FOREWORD
I t has been my pleasure to fly
the North American P-S 1 Mus-
tang in air shows for more than
three decades.
book, about the Mustang aircraft
that I have grown to know so well
over much of that same span of
years.
the Mustang in the urgency of
wartime, as well as the thousands
of pilots who honed their skills in
the P-S1 under fire, backed up by
maintenance people who kept the
Mustangs flying. So please sit back
and enjoy this book as a tribute to
the Mustang airplane, and the peo-
ple who gave it life and capitalized
on its superior abilities.
During that time, I have come to
know the Mustang inside and out.
And that inside look is what makes
this WarbirdTech volume about the
P-S1 Mustang uniquely interesting
and useful. Excerpted drawings
from original technical manuals,
interpretive photo captions, and
text backed up by official docu-
mentation give the reader more
than just another picture book
about the magnificent Mustang.
My association with North Ameri-
can Aviation afforded a wonderful
opportunitywhen company presi-
dent Lee Atwood bought a slick
refurbished surplus P-S1 from Cav-
alier Aircraft in Florida for me to fly
at air shows in the early 1960s. Of
all the different North American air-
craft I have flown in demonstra-
tions, it gives me great satisfaction
to be so closely associated with the
sleek, powerful, and capable P-S1.
