Foreword
With its reputation as one of Europe's foremost party
capitals firmly entrenched, there's little need to list
the Belgrade's ample nightlife credentials. However,
during the spring and summer months things reach
truly epic proportions with revellers packing the streets
until dawn on a nightly basis, and a general festive
atmosphere permeating throughout the whole city. If
there's one word for visitors to familiarise themselves
with its 'splavovi' - the Serbian name for the party boats
moored along Belgrade's river banks. Coming in various
shapes and sizes, these are a must for any night out
(p 41-44). The coming months will also have one of the
most packed and varied concert schedules the city has
ever seen, with performance by international superstars
such as Amy Winehouse, Moby, David Guetta, Judas
Priest, Whitesnake, Richard Marx, Sting and Joe Cocker
among others (p 11-20), as well as one of the world's
largest dance parties as Belgrade Arena hosts the
famed Sensation! Of course the biggest event of the
season, and one of our personal favourites on the annual
calendar, is Belgrade Design Week (p 15). More than just
a design event, it's a cultural festival unlike any other in
the region - bringing together global leaders in various
design-related fields, as well as the mini urban music
festival known as DizajNights. As always we welcome

National Theatre on Republic
Square. Reminiscent of the
famed La Scala theatre in
Milan, the building was origi-
nally constructed in 1869 at
the request of King Mihailo
Obrenović and was designed
by Belgrade's most prolific ar-
chitect at the time, Aleksandar
Bugarski. The theatre's current appearance dates
from 1922, and its two main halls host frequent drama,
opera and ballet performances. During the NATO air
raids in 1999, it was the only theatre in Belgrade to
keep its doors open to the public - charging a symbolic
one dinar admission fee for all shows.
In Your Pocket has broken much new ground of
late, publishing new guides in the Netherlands
( Tilburg , with Amsterdam to follow very soon),
in Austria ( Vienna ), in Croatia ( Šibenik ), in Swi-
tzerland ( Zurich ) and in Belarus ( Minsk ). This
year will also see the first non-European Pockets
rolled out in South Africa and Mozambique .
