Read this first!  Important information for all customers

To start using your new Sage 50 Accounts 2008:

1.     Before you install, answer the questions in this document.

2.     Make sure Internet Explorer (v6 or above) is installed on your PC. Your new Sage 50 Accounts installation CD provides a copy of Internet Explorer v6 if you require it.

3.     When you are ready to install Sage 50 Accounts 2008, make sure no programs are open on your PC.

4.     Insert the installation CD and follow the on-screen instructions.

5.     If you do not have .NET 2 installed on your PC, Sage 50 Accounts 2008 will install this as a requirement.
Note: This will take several minutes.

6.     To log on for the first time, type MANAGER as the logon (no password is required).

7.      Please register your program – otherwise it will stop working after 60 days.

8.      If you have any customers in Belgium with VAT registration numbers of nine digits, it will be necessary to amend them to ten digits by putting a ‘0’ in front of the nine digits.

If you have existing chart of accounts nominal code errors

Be aware that if you have existing nominal codes that are not represented in your Chart of Accounts, then any financial reports generated by Sage 50 Accounts may generate invalid data.

Take precautionary steps to correct and verify such COA errors, before installing Sage 50 Accounts.

If you are installing over a network

For Sage 50 Accounts the NetSetup install option is no longer available.

If you require any further information about installing a multi user version of Sage 50 Accounts, please refer to your installation guide.

If you are upgrading from a previous version

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, please read the answer that follows. If you answer ‘no’, simply move on to the next question.

Before you upgrade…

Are you upgrading from v7 or an older version?

You cannot upgrade to Sage 50 Accounts 2008 from Sage 50 Accounts v7 (sold up until 2001), or from any earlier versions. To find out your current version:

1.     Open your current Sage 50 Accounts.

2.     Click on Help > About.

For further assistance about upgrading your Sage 50 Accounts data, please contact technical support on 0845 111 55 55 or support@sage.com

Are you using the Accountant link?

Is your accountant finalising your books using the Accountant Link feature? You will lose any material changes made before upgrading. We recommend that you apply any changes from your accountant before you upgrade. If this is not possible, then you should print a copy of your material changes before you upgrade.

Are you using Client Manager datasets?

You must complete and export any changes that you make to Sage 50 Accounts v11 or Instant Accounts v11 datasets before you upgrade.

If you are upgrading from Sage 50 Accounts Client Manager v11 or v12 you will be required to enter a new Activation Key in Sage 50 2008 Client Manager.  This can be found on the despatch note.

Are you upgrading from v9.1?

You must remove Sage Licence Manager from your PC. Note: you will no longer be able to use v9.1 when you have removed Sage Licence Manager.

To remove Sage Licence Manager:

1.     Locate your Sage Licence Manager icon. This is a small box and padlock icon located in your system tray at the bottom right of your screen. Right-click the Sage Licence Manager icon, and select Exit. The icon will disappear from your system tray.

2.     Click: Start > Settings > Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.

3.     From the Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Program window appears.

4.     Select Sage Licence Manager from the program list. Click Change/Remove.

5.     Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the program. A prompt will appear to ask if you want to remove any shared files. Click 'No To All' to continue.

After a short wait, the Sage Licence Manager is removed from your PC.

Are you upgrading from v 8 or 9?

Have you changed any of the standard Sage reports or layouts?

Yes – to keep these changed reports, use Custom Install. Ensure you have chosen the particular components you want to install.

No – simply use the default settings to install your new program.

Do you use the Configurable Columns option?

Make a note of your Configurable Columns settings before upgrading.

When you upgrade, all configurable columns settings are reset to their defaults. You will need to re-establish your settings, after installation using the Tools > Options > Toolbar tab.

After you upgrade…

Do you still need to register your new Sage program?

Are you upgrading from v 8 or 9?

Check your company price lists after you have upgraded. In your previous version of Sage 50 Accounts, prices were rounded to the nearest 2 decimal places; they are now rounded up to the nearest 2 decimal places.

Do you use Days Sales Outstanding?

Sage 50 2008 calculates Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) differently to v8 – v11. It excludes Customer accounts that have never had any transactions recorded against them from the calculation.

This change improves the accuracy of the DSO figure. If you have any inactive customer accounts, then you may notice an increase in the DSO figure after upgrading.

Do you use Departments?

You can now edit the 'Reference' field as well as department names. You will also notice that the new department reference has been created using the old department number - see the examples below.

However, because the department reference is editable, you can change this to any combination of numbers and letters that you like. Sage 50 Accounts stores a separate identifier for the departments (the old department number), which will maintain any links to existing transactions.

So, even when you change the department reference, you won't lose any valuable information.

Do you have Reports to Convert?

Since the release of Sage 50 Accounts 2007, Report Designer has been included in the software. If you are upgrading from v12 or below, any existing reports you have written will have to be converted before they can be run in the new format. You will be prompted to convert your reports, when you run them.

It is also possible to manually convert reports using the convertreports.exe program located in the same folder as Sage 50 Accounts. Alternatively, use the Import option from within Report Designer 2008.

Note: There are a number of reports that have been excluded from Sage 50 Accounts 2008 to ensure compatibility with the new Report Designer.  If you require further assistance or advice regarding these reports, please contact Sage Technical Support on 0845 111 55 55 or support@sage.com.

Do you use Data Path for Reports

If you make use of the “Use data path for reports” flag in Company Preferences > Reporting, and then for some reason, subsequently reinstall Sage 50 Accounts 2008 “over the top of” the existing installation of Sage 50 Accounts 2008, you will not have the latest report versions and layouts.

In such an instance, “Layouts only Backup.001” and “Reports only Backup.001” recovery backups are available in the \Support\Backups folder on the
program CD.
