Abstract
Dierentmusicaltraditionsusedierentscales.ModernWesternmusicusesmajor
andminorscales.Scalesfromothertraditionsincludethepentatonicscale,bluesscale,
andthemedievalchurchmodes.

1Introduction
Sounds-ordinary,everyday”noises”-comeineveryconceivablepitch 1 andgroupsof
pitches.Infact,theessenceofnoise,”whitenoise”,isbasicallyeverypitchatonce,sothat
noparticularpitchisheard.
Oneofthethingsthatmakesmusicpleasanttohearandeasyto”understand”isthat
onlyafewofallthepossiblepitchesareused.Butnotallpiecesofmusicusethesameset
ofpitches.Inordertobefamiliarwiththeparticularnotesthatapieceofmusicmightuse,
musiciansstudyscales.
Thesetofpitchesthatapieceofmusicusescanbearrangedintoascale.Inascale,
thepitchesareusuallyarrangedfromlowesttohighest(orhighesttolowest),inapattern
thatusuallyrepeatswithineveryoctave 2 .
Thesetofnotesthatareused,andtheirrelationshipstoeachother,makesabigimpact
onhowmusicsounds.Forexample,forcenturies,Westernmusic 3 hasbeenbasedonmajor 4
andminorscales 5 .ThatisoneofthethingsthatmakesitinstantlyrecognizableasWestern
music.TraditionalmusicfromeasternAsia,ontheotherhand,wasformanycenturies
basedonapentatonicscale,givingitamuchdierentflavorthatisalsoeasytorecognize.
Someofthemorecommonlyusedscalesthatarenotmajororminorareintroduced
here.ThepentatonicscaleisusuallyassociatedwitheasternAsia,butmanyothermusic
traditionsalsouseit.Thebluesscale,usedinblues,jazz,andotherAfrican-American
traditions,isaresultofacompromisebetweenEuropeanandAfricanscales.Manyofthe
scalesthatarelabelled”exotic”aretakenfromthemusicaltraditionsofeasternEurope,

TheWesternmusicaltraditionthatdevelopedinEuropeafterthemiddleagesisbasedon
majorandminorscales,butthereareotherscalesthatareapartofthistradition.
Inthechromaticscale,allintervalsareahalfstep 7 .Thisgivesallthesharp,flat,and
naturalnotescommonlyusedinallWesternmusic.Younginstrumentalistsareencourages
topracticeplayingthechromaticscaleinordertoensurethattheyknowthefingeringsfor
allthenotes.Listentoachromaticscale 8 .
Inawholetonescale,alltheintervalsareawholestep.Inboththechromaticand
thewholetonescales,alltheintervalsarethesame.Thisresultsinscalesthathaveno
tonalcenter 9 ;nonotefeelsmoreorlessimportantthantheothers.Becauseofthis,most
traditionalandpopularWesternmusicusesmajororminorscalesratherthanthechromatic
orwholetonescales.Butcomposerswhodon’twanttheirmusictohaveatonalcenter(for
example,manycomposersof”modernclassical”music)oftenusethesescales.Listentoa
wholetonescale 10 .

amajororminorscale,areusedoften.
Inapentatonicscale,onlyfiveofthepossiblepitcheswithinanoctaveareused.(So
thescalewillrepeatstartingatthesixthtone.)Themostfamiliarpentatonicscaleisthe
onethatisusedinmuchofthemusicofeasternAsia.Youmaybefamiliarwiththisscale
asthescalethatisproducedwhenyouplayallthe”blackkeys”onapianokeyboard.
Listentotheblackkeypentatonicscale 12 .Likeotherscales,thispentatonicscaleis
transposable 13 ;youcanmovetheentirescaleupordownbyahalfsteporamajorthird
oranyinterval 14 youlike.Thescalewillsoundhigherorlower,butotherthanthatitwill
soundthesame,becausethepatternofintervalsbetweenthenotes(halfsteps,wholesteps,
andminorthirds)isthesame.(Formoreonintervals,seeHalfStepsandWholeSteps 15 and
Interval 16 .Formoreonpatternsofintervalswithinscales,seeMajorScales 17 andMinor
Scales 18 .)Nowlistentoatransposedpentatonicscale 19 .
Butthisisnottheonlypossibletypeofpentatonicscale.Anyscalethatusesonlyfive
noteswithinoneoctaveisapentatonicscale.Thefollowingpentatonicscale,forexample,is
notsimplyanothertranspositionofthe”blackkey”pentatonicscale;thepatternofintervals

Anyscalewilllistacertainnumberofnoteswithinanoctave.Formajorandminorscales,
therearesevennotes;forpentatonic,five;forachromaticscale;eleven.Althoughsome
divisionsaremorecommonthanothers,anydivisioncanbeimagined,andmanyareused
indierentmusicaltraditionsaroundtheworld.Forexample,theclassicalmusicofIndia

Microtonesareintervalssmallerthanahalfstep.Besidesbeingnecessarytodescribe

6ModesandRagas
Manymusictraditionsdonotusescales.ThemostfamiliarofthesetotheWestern 24 listener
aremedievalchantandtheclassicalmusicofIndia.Intheseandothermodaltraditions,
therulesforconstructingapieceofmusicarequitedierentthantherulesformusicthat
