step 1 Begin this project by
milling a pair of desk sides for the
slant-lid portion of the desk.
Identify the sides, making sure
they are mirror images.
step 3 Cut the desk bottom to size,
shown with the matching hardwood at the
front and secondary wood making up the
balance, and create a 3/8" x 3/4" rabbet at
each end. Place the desk side in position
and cut the corresponding tails. This detail
allows you cover the dovetails with a small
moulding and still keep the strength of the
joint.
step 2 Lay out and form the pins
on the desk sides, marking the
depth to only 3/8". I make sure to
end each side with half tails so that
I can cut the rabbet for the back
without stop-cutting (see step 7).
step 4 Lay out and cut the pins
on the desk sides for the half-blind
dovetails needed for the desk top.
Again, leave a half tail at the rear

step 5 Mark the location for the writing surface
and create the stop-dado. I like to use a straight-
edge and 3/4"pattern-cutting bit.
step 6 Cut the second dado for the middle shelf.

step 7 Next, make the rabbet
for the backboards. I make two
cuts on the table saw. First, set the
blade height to 3/8" and move the
fence 1 /2" away to make the cut.
Then reset the blade to cut 5/8"
high and move the fence to 5/16".
This is shown here and completes
the rabbet. Make sure to cut the
inside rear of each side.
Step 8 With your desk top
roughed to width and cut to
length, invert the sides into place,
transfer the layout for the tails
and complete the joint.
step 9 Tap the top into place,
mark the front edge and cut the
piece to its final width.
step 10 Next, back cut the
lower edge of the top with an
angle that is 90° to the top front
edge, leaving a 3/4" run at the
first cut,
step 11 With the case
temporarily together, cut and
install the writing surface and
middle shelf by notching the
front edge to fit the stop dado
cuts made earlier.
