Eisteddfod is a Welsh festival of literature, music and theatre. The word comes 1 ____ and means ‘sitting together’. Another popular Welsh word is ‘bard’ as Wales has always been famous 2 ____. The tradition of an eisteddfod dates back to the 12th century when the first festivals of poetry and music were held.
The most important eisteddfod is the National Eisteddfod of Wales, the largest festival of music and poetry in Europe. It lasts eight days. The performances are 3 ____ only. The festival is held every year in the first week of August in a different location in Wales. Over 6,000 people competed at the 2006 National Eisteddfod and there were 150,000 visitors.
Another important eisteddfod in the calendar is ‘Eisteddfod Yr Urdd’, or the Youth Eisteddfod. It is organized for young Welsh people aged 7 to 24.
