POLICE



Police services:

o        no national police force

o        organised, employed and paid by local authorities – police force in England and Wales on county basis, in Scotland – regional

o        The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is the territorial police force responsible for Greater London, excluding the "square mile" of the City of London which is the responsibility of the City of London Police. The MPS also has significant national responsibilities such as co-ordinating and leading on counter-terrorism matters and protection of the British Royal Family and senior figures of Her Majesty's Government.

 

ARREST

o        With or without a warrant – issue by magistrate

o        Arrest person – right to consult a solicitor and to inform one person

o        Police may delay this right up to 36 hours

o        Person can be detained up to 96 hours without a charge

o        Bail Act – court decides if defendant should be released on Bail

 

PRISONS

o        run by Home Office

o        Board of Visitors

o        Custody – for serious crimes

 

o        Magistrates’ courts – to 12 months

o        Crown courts – other sentences (life sentences)

 

PROPERTY CRIMES

o        Fines + compensation to victims

o        Probation

o        Community work

o        Curfew order
