Topic:                             It’s Pancake Day!

age:                                           3rd grade of a primary school

1.                  Introduction: T explains to Ss that in the UK people celebrate the Pancake Day and encourages children to find a Polish equivalent of this (‘Tłusty Czwartek”). T explains itsorigin (using all supplies of dairy products before the Lent)              (5 min.)

2.                  Guess the ingredient game - T asks what pancakes are made of and presents flashcards with ingredients calling them in English for Ss to repeat. Then T says them silently and Ss read her lips.                                                                                                                              (5 min.)

3.                  Run and touch game – T hangs flashcards on the blackboard. The class is divided into 2 groups and they are to stand in lines in front of the blackboard. T reads loudly names of the ingredients and the first Ss from each line run to touch the flashcard. Who does it earlier, wins a point for their group (which can be drawn as a pancake instead of writing down numbers). The winner is a group which first wins 5 points.                                                                       (5 min.)

4.                  Worksheet. Ex.1 Ss match syllables which make up names of the ingredients. They write them down below pictures. T checks it asking volunteers to write them on the blackboard.

(6 min.)

5.  A song. T preteach words pan and bowl. T informs Ss that they are going to listen to the song which will instruct them how to make pancakes. While listening they imitate T’s gestures to the song.                                                                                                                              (3 min.)

Put some flour, egg and milk in a bowl. (putting ingredients into the bowl)

And mix, mix, mix. (mixing with a spoon)

Put some butter in a pan. (throwing butter)

Add the mixture (pouring the mixture on a pan)

This is fun! (hands up)

Toss the pancake! x2 (tossing)

Now it’s ready (a thumb up:C)

Yum, yum, yum (striking the tummy)

6. Worksheet.  Ex. 2 Ss listen to the song once again and try to match parts of the recipe to the pictures. T checks answers                                                                                                  (5 min.)

7. Singing the song. Ss sing the song and  do the actions.                                                         (2 min.)

8. Memory game. T assures that there are no flashcards on the blackboard and Ss do not look at their worksheets. They are to remember all 6 ingredients needed to make the pancakes and write them down in their notebooks. Later they can check the spelling with the exercise           1 from the worksheet.                                                                                                                 (5 min.)

9. In their notebooks Ss write and illustrate the recipe for pancakes.                             (10 min.)
