Nobody knows it's Swiss except for the Swiss. The Germans think it's a joke, a stage name because it's the children's song "Auf Der Maur, Auf Der Lauer", and then the rest of the world thinks it's Dutch because of "van der" types of names. Only the Swiss seem to know that it's Swiss German. Luckily I went to an alternative school. So, everybody was a freak, all their parents were strange, everything was strange whether their names were or not. My father was a very well known journalist and politician in town and everybody knew the name because of that. So, luckily in Montreal people knew it, but then as soon as I've left Montreal into the world of music it's completely impossible for anybody to see it as a normal name or pronounce it. My album is a solo project and not a band, so, naming it a band name would not make any sense. Basically I was born with a very heavy rock name and I'm very lucky to have been born with a Gothic Germanic rock name. Whether it's a band like Danzig or Rammstein or Van Halen, the band leader has a crazy name and is very confident with the crazy name. Naming it anything else than Auf Der Maur would seem phoney to me. Schlie?lich haben dich w?hrend deiner Zeit bei Hole und dann bei den Smashing Pumpkins viele Menschen gut gefunden, n?mlich so gut, dass sie dich gern bald als "artist in your own right", als Solo-K?nstlerin, gesehen h?tten.... I did five years with Hole and one year with the Pumpkins. When I left Hole I was planning to start this record, but one of my favourite bands of all time gave me a call and asked me to play bass with them and I wasn't going to say no. But after I left the Pumpkins it had been six years of living music in a very particular structure. So, when I left in 2001 I wanted to rediscover life in a very simple and innocent way and I broke down all structures and I took 2001 off to explore my photography and to become a human being outside of the structure of a huge major label band. So, for me it didn't take a long time. It took a year to re-assess my life and then in 2002 I began the recording of my record, which for creative freedom reasons I self-financed and self-produced. I made all the decisions. It was entirely my responsibility, no manager, no one to answer to, not even a band member. I'm a patient person and I took my entire life to make this record. This is themost personal thing I've ever done in my life. I was in no rush, I didn't need to do this at the age of 21 years old, I needed to do this when I was ready. I see it as just a very natural musical evolution and life evolution. I'm ready for it now. Hole Was hat Melissa Auf Der Maur f?r sich mitgenommen aus ihrer Zeit bei Hole (1994 - 1999)? I learned a lot. It's about formative years from the age of 22 to 27. It's your prime learning and expanding and discovering your identity through experience. I was very lucky, and the reason I said yes to joining Hole was, of course, my love of music but even furthermore my lofe of life and wanting to travel the world. It was the most formative years of my life. I can say that I learned everything in those years. I was in university at the time and I was playing in a local band. I was very active in the local music and arts community in Montreal. When Billy Corgan called and suggested I join his friend Courtney's band Hole, I said no thank you, I have my own life, my own projects, I'm not interested, why ould I join a band of strangers. And then within a week of saying no, everyone from my father to my friends to my mother, everyone said are you sure you don't want to reconsider this? It sounded like a once in a lifetime opportunity. And it was in fact my father who first inquired, what do you mean it's like a real job but it's in music? I said yeah it's like a real band. And then he was the one who quickly encouraged me to do it. But neither of my parents were ever people who thought I should go to university or get a real job, it was more do what you like, and this just seemed like a good adventure, to travel the world, to them. B?se Worte ?ber Courtney gibt es aber keineswegs von ihr, ganz im Gegenteil, auch wenn sich Melissa Auf Der Maur in dieser Angelegenheit letztlich geschickt diplomatisch gibt. Courtney was a big person of my life, but she didn't change my personality. She's a very strong person who knows exactly what she wants and she goes for it. And she's somebody who really believes in making an impact as a woman in a male dominated field of rock music, which is what I feel most proud about my five years with Hole and about my effort of being her team member of following through with that and really making an impact for women in music. Courtney Love is a very strong person, that's basically all I can say. James Iha von den Smashing Pumpkins spielt auch mit und noch so mancher, den wir auch eventuell ganz gern zum guten Freund h?tten. Melissa kennt sie alle, und v?llig gratis gespielt haben sie auch noch auf ihrem Album. These are all people I've known in one way or another at least through their music for over a decade. Every person on the record had to mean something to me musically slash personally. Album Resummee und Make Up Kit Ok, ein Album Resumee muss noch erbeten werden im Interview mit Melissa Auf Der Maur. Vorher frag ich sie aber noch zu diesem Make Up Kit, das es vor ein paar Jahren da mal gegeben hat, und f?r das Melissa Auf Der Maur das offizielle Gesicht war. So wie Isabella Rossellini das Lancome-Gesicht war und Paulina Porizkova das Estee Lauder Gesicht, irgendwann, als ich noch klein war. Wie gern h?tt ich so was wie dieses Make Up Kit, f?r das Melissa modelte, gehabt, aber so was hat es damals nicht gegeben. Ich hab das nur gemacht, meint Melissa, weil ich kein Geld hatte, nachdem ich nicht mehr bei den Pumpkins spielte, und weil die Modelling-Session ganz lustig war, fand sie es auch ok, sagt sie, aber Model wolle sie in Zukunft keines mehr sein.
