Using the Crop Tool
Request
I would like to crop an image.
Response
The Crop tool allows you to remove areas from the margins of an image with no
regard for aspect ratio (Free Crop), or at a specified aspect ratio (Fixed Aspect
Ratio).Here we will crop an image using the Free Crop setting.
Before
Image before cropping. We will crop the
image so that the crop area only
contains the blue fish on the right side.
After
Image after cropping. Excess portions surrounding the
fish have been removed.
Procedures
STEP 1:
Open an image and double-click the Crop tool .......................................................................... 2

STEP 1: Open an image and double-click the Crop tool

Double-click the Crop tool.

The Crop Options palette is displayed. In this example, we will not specify an
aspect ratio when cropping this image, so select
Free
Crop
from the pulldown menu
and click
OK
.

When the
Show Crop Assistance Grid
checkbox is
enabled, a grid to assist you with your crop is displayed
inside the active crop.
STEP 2: Specify the crop
When the mouse cursor is positioned over the image, the cursor changes to the crop
cursor. Drag the cursor diagonally across the portion of the image you would like to
keep.

STEP 3: Reposition the crop
To reposition the crop, place the crop cursor over the specified crop area and drag
the crop to the desired position.
Here we have repositioned
the crop by dragging it down.

The crop area offers a total of 8 anchor points, positioned at regular
intervals, around the crop
area. Dragging any of these points allows you to adjust the size of the crop area.
STEP 4: Apply the crop

Position the crop cursor over the specified crop area and double-click.

The crop will be applied, removing all portions of the image not within the crop
area.

Double-click anywhere inside the
crop area.

Saving cropped images:
If images are saved in JPEG or TIFF format after cropping, portions of the original image that
were cropped out cannot be restored later. To prevent this, save cropped images using the
Save as…
option.
If images are saved in NEF format, crop information is saved with the image. This means
that the original image can be restored at any time.
