Trick or Treat!
I'm ready for fall, even though it doesn't kick
into high gear here in southern California
until November often. As J write this in late
September, the temperature is inching up to
the 100' mark. I look forward to cool breezes,
crisp air, fall decor, and of course, photo-
graphing colorful autumn foliage. And then
there's Halloween, which brings out interest-
ing characters in many of us, thus offering
a new wealth of photo opportunities. It's no
wonder that our theme for this issue is Night,
Low-Light & Special Effects.
To this end, we're featuring a profile on Jill
Waterman, who is the author of Night & Low
Light Photography: Professional Techniques
from Expertsfor Artistic and Commercial Suc-
cess. She describes this type of photography
as "a never-ending process of discovery,n and
presents her work in this book as well as low-
light images and how-to techniques by a num-
ber of other accomplished photographers. In
this interesting interview by DP Associate
Editor Allison Gibson, Jill discusses her New
Years Eve series of images, as well as some
of the techniques she uses for shooting after
dark and in low-light conditions. Also in this
issue is my interview with fine art photogra-
pher and teacher David Julian, who promotes
creative thinking in his workshops and has
produced some beautiful photo illustrations
that are purely a product of his imagination.
He also discusses his work for non-profit or-
ganizations, including a series of images about
personal items lost in Hurricane Katrina.
And we've got more stories that illustrate our
theme. Photographer/writer Clive Branson
shares some of his gorgeous images and a list
of tips on photographing graveyards in "Life
of a Cemetery." Dr Technical Editor Tony
Gomez shares his views on photographing
after dark and in low-light, including advice
on ISO speeds, how to avoid digital noise, and
special software. And I've reviewed several
new Lensbaby lenses, which give you the great
selective-focus effects for which Lensbaby has
become known.
Some of our up-to-the minute equipment
reviews include Theano Nikitas' take on the
new Sony A330, a great entry-level lO-mega-
pixel D-SLR. This camera features Creative
Style settings, which include Vivid, Portrait,
Night View and B&W, as well as an on-board
help guide. The Canon Digital Rebel has
been a very popular camera for years now,
and Greg Scoblete has reviewed its latest
generation, the TH, which offers 15MP and
HD video recording capabilities. Greg also
proves the hardiness of the Olympus Tough,
a 12MP waterproof compact camera, which
he handed to his very surprised children with
this request: "Do your worst!" Apparently they
did what their father told them to do, and the
little camera came through with flying colors.
And Don Sutherland reviews the Sigma DP-2,
which he compares to a Leica.
Our current subject for "Inside the Image" is
Arnufo Salinas, from Edinburgh, Texas. He's a
great photographer who contributed images
to our Flickr group. Check out his beautiful
still -life image, which was taken at the very
first wedding he had ever photographed.

and shooting some brilliant fall color, and we
