Like any crafts person, my work space is
full of little bits and pieces that ‘I might need
one day’. Well after doing some decorating, I
couldn’t bear to throw away all the little paint
colour swatches I had accumulated when trying
to decide on the colour scheme. I have now
found them to be fabulous for craft work.
Materials Required:
Old paint colour swatch cards.
Teddy paper punch: PPU80.
Scraps of paper and corrugated paper in
various colours.
Ribbon and ribbon bows.
Craft knife and ruler.
Cutting mat.
Standard hole punch.
Deckle edged scissors.
P.V.A. Craft adhesive.
Card Mount: DEC4U-27, Bright Blue (or to
match your swatch).
To Make The Card:
The swatches I had were mostly ones which
have different shades of the same colour in a
strip with white bands between them. I decided
to use one colour swatch for the background,
with the teddies and deckled strips cut from a
contrasting swatch.
So the first thing to do is choose two swatches
which look really good together, in the main card
mine are dark blue and yellow.
Having chosen the swatches, select a card
mount and some scraps of paper to make a back-
ground in colours that work with them. It’s a bit
like decorating then choosing the furnishings etc.
to match the room, but on a much smaller scale
and you don’t have to live with your mistakes.

Using a sharp craft knife
and a ruler, cut the white edges
off of the swatch which you
intend to use as the background
piece. Cut the swatch to a good
length for the size of card you
are using, I found three panels
were perfect on the 88mm x
114mm card.
Cut a background oblong
of card so it is just a couple
of millimetres bigger than the
trimmed swatch all round, then
a second piece (if desired) to
approximately 2mm bigger all
round than the last piece.
Glue the larger background
centrally onto the front panel of
the card then the smaller piece
and the swatch centrally on top
of this.
Punch one teddy from three
different shades in the contrast-
ing swatch. Place them onto
the background swatch but
don’t glue them on just yet. On
the blue card I put the lighter
teddies on the top and bottom
panels and the darker one on the centre, but the
opposite way round in the peach/brown card.
Using the deckled scissors, cut two strips
of colour from the teddy swatch, making them
wide enough to cover the white bands on the
background swatch. Cut the strips to length and
glue them into place.
Place the teddies at slightly different angles
on the panels and glue them into position.
Decorate the
corner using a
ribbon bow if
desired.
You can also make really stylish bookmarks
and gift tags using the same basic method. The
bookmarks will need an extra panel or two of
swatch for the background because they are
longer. Why not try adding extra elements such
as gold or silver foiled paper for the punchouts
or a mix of three colour swatches rather than
just two.
The tags use just one panel, to give them a
little more interest and depth, use several layers
of background, make one of them from corrugat-
ed paper for added texture as well. Try a row of
bears using a very tiny bear punch and deckle
cut the back-
ground for a
different effect.
Both the
bookmarks and
these tiny gift
tags need a
hole punched
in one corner
for threading
the ribbon
through.
