MAIN PICTURE Farewell, Red Leader — In December we received the sad news
that the greatest British pilot of his generation, Ray Hanna, had passed
away. During his long and varied career, Ray thrilled spectators and pilots
alike at shows and events all around the world with his remarkable displays
of astonishing virtuosity. Here, Ray is seen in July 1998 in the front seat of
Folland Gnat G-BVPP/“XR993”, during his fi rst sortie in the type since 1970.
Ray was no stranger to the midget trainer, having been a founder member of
the Red Arrows in 1965, and leading the unrivalled aerobatic team until 1969.
