Halloween
1. Read the article about Halloween traditions. Would you like to have these traditions
in Poland?
In Scotland, a popular Halloween tradition is guising. The name comes from the word disguise ,
which means a costume that changes how you look. On Halloween, Scottish children dress up as
witches, skeletons, vampires or ghosts and visit the houses in their neighbourhood. When somebody
opens the door, the children sing a song, say a poem, do a dance or tell a joke. Then the
neighbours give them treats for their performance, usually nuts, apples, sweets or coins.
In the USA, children have a similar tradition: trick or treating. They also wear scary
costumes and go from house to house. When the neighbours open the door, the
children ask, “Trick or treat?” It means that they want to get a treat. If they do
not get anything, they can play a trick, such as putting toothpaste on the
neighbour’s door handle or ringing the doorbell and running away. In the trick or
treating tradition, children do not have to perform to get a treat from the
neighbours.
