Welcome
Firstly, and obviously, have a restful and peaceful Christmas and a happy new
year. And thank you for your support throughout this year
If you are sharp eyed and a regular reader then you will notice that weÓve
changed our font size and style. This is mainly because we have so much material
for this issue that without a font reduction, the size of the file would be a bit silly.
ThereÓs also less scrolling down needed as well. We did promise you a bumper
version.
An active interest in the subject of ufology involves an ongoing developing
process. As you read more and talk to more people, your ideas and thoughts
develop further and are constantly changing. Some people Ðharden upÑ and
become more sceptical. As they survey the wreckage of failure to produce solid
evidence and what they perceive as the continuing existence of ÐidiotsÑ who
fantasise about aliens and their presence here on earth etc., they go in the
opposite direction and become solid Ðnuts and boltsÑ type folk. For them,
conformation of ET existence revolves solely around solid, scientific evidence that
can be laboratory tested and so on.
From where IÓm coming from, that attitude just does not make sense. Of course it
would be nice if a downed alien craft was wheeled out and displayed for the entire
world to see. And who knows, it may happen one day. But in some ways, that
type of evidence is almost irrelevant to me and can get in the way of recognising
the subject and appreciating whatÓs going on.
We are talking about the probability of intelligent life from another planet having
the ability to fly a tremendous distance through the galaxy to come and have a
look at us here. Arthur C. Clark thinks their technology may look like magic to us.
Others dispute that. I donÓt. Of course it would seem like the supernatural to us.
My point is, you canÓt box it up. ItÓs irrational to try and do that. ItÓs too broad a
subject, too strange, too weird to restrict it to bits of metal being tested in some
anonymous lab somewhere.
IÓm not in the same place now as I was at the beginning of the year. I havenÓt
become more sceptical, IÓve become yet more accepting.
Take the Grant Cameron interview in this issue for example. As you will see when
you get to it, the man has some interesting ideas and thoughts about whatÓs been
going on. He doesnÓt have all the answers but his take on the events of the last
50 years for instance is fascinating. ItÓs theory of course, no proof, but it is an
intelligent insight that makes sense. I say thereÓs no proof but Grant would argue
that point. ItÓs a case of pulling the threads together and coming to a conclusion.
It goes without saying that we have a fascinating and wonderful issue for you.
The Christmas period can be a bit boring after the usual activities and I think a lot

of people on both sides of the Atlantic are taking a fair bit of time off this year. If
thatÓs the case for you, then I hope the ennui of family life is relieved by this
issue.

An interview with Nick Pope
Nick Pope
Nick is undoubtedly the leading UK spokesman on Ufology. It is to him that the
principal media turn to when they want a view or a quote, and to whom
documentary makers approach for expert opinion on certain aspects of the
subject. And heÓs well qualified to offer that opinion, having manned the MOD
desk relating to ufological matters for 3 years.
He is also very good on and with the media, having taken a number of courses on
how to handle them and deal with them. He is articulate, intelligent, positive, and
informed.
He is also a published author and has written both fact and fiction.
Inevitably, with such a high profile, he has his critics. Perhaps it would be unusual
if he didnÓt.
The purpose of this interview was to find out a little more about Nick, about his
life and his influences and interests and to also put to him some of the main and
oft repeated criticisms levelled against him. He was very helpful and co-operative
and was prepared to answer any question.

SM: Where were you born, where did you grow up, and how were you
educated?
NP: I was born in London and grew up in Surrey, in a village called Rowledge.
This was a few miles from the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough, where
my father spent much of his career. I was educated privately, firstly at a prep
school called Barfield, near Farnham and then at Lord Wandsworth College, a
public school in Hampshire. I then studied law, but gave this up after a year, as I
realised that a legal career was not what I wanted.
