For model year 1999, the Saab 9-5 is available with two engine variants:
a 2.3 liter 4-cylinder (B235) Light Pressure Turbo "Ecopower"
a 3.0 liter 6-cylinder (B308) Light Pressure Turbo "Ecopower"
Note that the majority of the illustrations in this book refer to the 4-cylinder variant.

4 Cylinder Engine
Compared with the engine fitted in Saab 900
and 9000 models, the 4-cylinder engine in the
Saab 9-5 has been extensively modified in
several respects.
The purpose of the modifications is to reduce
fuel consumption, improve emission control
efficiency and minimize vibration at low engine
rpm.
As a result of the above modifications, most of
the engine components are completely new.
Several repair methods and tightening torques
are also different from those used earlier. To
give an example, the balance shaft sprockets
are now secured by M8 bolts instead of the M 10
bolts previously fitted.
For model year 1999, the B235 engine produces
170 HP @ 5500 rpm and 208 ft.lbs. of torque at
1800 rpm.
Some of the more important changes are
described below:
The compression ratio has been raised.
The valves are lighter and the valve springs
softer.
The cam times have been modified.
The cylinder head gasket is of sheet metal.
The connecting rods are longer and the
pistons lighter.
The balance shafts are lighter and have new
chain sprockets.
The engine block and timing cover are
lighter.
The flywheel is heavier.

A 3.0 liter 6-cylinder (B308) Light Pressure
Turbo is offered as an optional engine in certain
9-5 models.
this turbocharger will pressurize air for all
cylinders, Saab refers to this design as
"asymmetrical" turbocharging.
This V6 engine utilizes one turbocharger
installed on the front exhaust manifold. Since
The B308 V6 engine produces 200 H.P. @ 5000
rpm and 228 ft.lbs. of torque at 2100 rpm.

New engine B235R, 230 hp - Model year 2000
A new engine was introduced on the 9-5 from
model year 2000. Principally, the engine is a
modified 9-3 B235R (Viggen) basic engine.

integrity diagnosis
Certain diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) have
been added and others have been revised to
obtain a more reliable diagnosis.
The B235R delivers a torque of 350 Nm in the
engine speed range 1900 - 3800 rpm, but during
fast acceleration it is allowed to reach 370 Nm in
the same speed range. This function is called
"Over-boost" and is available on the B235R
engine with manual gearbox only. Cars with
B235R and automatic transmission deliver 330
Nm. In order to handle the increased torque, the
automatic gearbox has been reinforced, as it
could handle max. 310 Nm earlier.
All cars that fulfill the LEV requirements are
fitted with a new ignition discharge module.
The air-flushed injectors previously fitted have
been discontinued.
Exhaust valves are manufactured in nimonic
alloy to resist the thermal stress. They can be
identified by a 5 mm depression in the valve disc
similar to the Viggen.
Compared with the 9-3 B235R, model year
1999, certain modifications have been made to
the basic engine. New connecting rods with
trapezoid small ends have been introduced.
Note that the spark plugs are platinum NGK
PFR7 H-10. This type of spark plug must be
used only in the engine variants we recommend.
(B205L, B205R, and B235R)
A Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger is fitted to
B235R engines (same as on the Viggen). This
has a greater capacity than the Garret GT-17
that was fitted on the B235E.
All B235R engines comply with environment
requirements for LEV (Low Emission Vehicle)
which means:

The B235R should be driven on high octane fuel
to deliver the specified torque.
