A Letter from the Mayor
Dear Friends:
Winter is a great time to visit New York City. You can bundle up and stroll
through a peaceful, snow-covered Central Park. Or you can share a hot
chocolate and a hearty meal with family and friends at one of our many
cafes and restaurants. Whether you’re the kind of person who likes the
chilly outdoors or prefers to stay inside until spring, there’s something
exciting to explore everywhere throughout the five boroughs.
Take the subway to one of our City’s historic neighborhoods; from Astoria
to Cobble Hill, from Greenwich Village to Riverdale, there’s the local fare,
with tastes from every world culture and one-of-a-kind shops and
boutiques that give New York its unique character.
If the weather gets too cold, you can step into one of the many New York
institutions that offer an entertaining and educational look at historical
and artistic treasures. Brush up on Greek and Roman history in the mag-
nificent Metropolitan Museum of Art; check out a Van Gogh or Picasso
in the Museum of Modern Art; or visit a Chelsea gallery or two to discover
the next big thing. Once you’ve warmed up, head back outside to go ice
skating at Rockefeller Center, or shop for gifts at one of the many markets
that pop up in our City’s parks and plazas every winter.
The winter also includes a number of outstanding events that are not to
be missed—and that happen only here in New York City. The year 2011
marks the 350th anniversary of the founding of Staten Island, and cultural
institutions throughout the City are celebrating this milestone. Carnegie
Hall, one of the world’s most famous arts and culture venues, is com-
memorating its 120th year. And the MCC Theater Youth Company, which
encourages after-school students to write and perform their own work,
is celebrating 10 years of its free educational outreach program—so be
sure to catch the stars of tomorrow as they make their showbiz debuts.
Whatever you choose to do, we’re certain you’ll agree there’s no better
place to vacation than New York City, the number-one tourist destination
