Prologue
Ethan threw himself down on the bank of the creek and looked up through the trees at a
sky so blue it hurt his eyes to see it. He turned to his best friend sprawled out right next
to him and whispered, “It’s finally over.”
The dark-haired young man sitting next to Ethan rolled onto his side and laid his head to
rest on his hand. “Yep.” Pale green eyes flashed with mirth, and a familiar grin hitched
up at one corner, making Ethan’s heart skitter. “Now we can do whatever the hell we
want, wherever the hell we want to do it.” He reached out, snagged the tasseled cap out
of Ethan’s hand and tossed it up in the air, catching it with barely a glance. “So, where
do you want to go first?”
“I don’t know.” Ethan hadn’t let himself think too hard beyond getting through high
school. More than that, he hadn’t let himself think that a cool guy like Aidan would still
be friends with him by graduation. Well, they’d just done that earlier today, so it might
be okay to start dreaming a little bit. “New York, California,” he kicked Aidan’s
cowboy boot with his dress shoe, “Texas.” Anything that would take them away from
the little western Maine town, Redemption--at least for a little while.
Aidan shot to his feet, hauling Ethan up with him. “Oh, so you want to learn to rope
cattle with the cowboys, huh?” He whipped his graduation gown over his head and
quickly twisted it into a rope. “Better start running, or I’m gonna give you your first
lesson right here.”
Snapping the material at Ethan like a wet towel in a gym locker room, Aidan gave a
warning that cracked across the quiet of the late afternoon.
“Shit! What the hell!” Ethan took off through the woods, the blood rushing through his
veins as the heat of Aidan reached him through the cool air, his friend hot on his trail.
“No, no, no! I changed my mind. I don’t want to rustle cattle anymore. Inbred cowboys,
hanging around after work fucking barn animals. No, we’ll go somewhere else.”
“Now you’re disrespecting where I come from!” Aidan’s deep voice rang out, catching
Ethan and sinking into his pores, as the teen’s attempts to rope him with the graduation
gown had yet to do. “Oh, you’re gonna pay for that, Ashworth. I swear I’m gonna kick
your ass.”
“You have to catch me first, jackass,” Ethan shouted, feeling high as a kite just from
being in Aidan’s presence. It had been that way for two years now, ever since Ethan
stood up for Aidan outside the guy’s job one Saturday afternoon. Aidan had given him a
grudging thank you afterward, and slowly, very slowly, they had become inseparable.
“Maybe, Ash, but when I catch you,” Aidan took a good swing at Ethan with the
graduation gown, but Ethan ducked and swerved before it looped him over the head,
“you’re gonna remember that I’m bigger than you and will kick your ass!”
Ethan kept up his pace, stuffing down a moan at the reminder of Aidan’s muscular
physique. Damn it, he did not need to be thinking shit like that about his only friend.
“Bigger makes you slower.” He threw a glance over his shoulder as he taunted Aidan,
and then wished he hadn’t. One look away from his path and his graduation gown
snagged a low tree branch, catching him up and slowing down his foot race. Ethan
yanked open the snaps and scrambled to get out of the blue gown, doing a roll around
the trunk of the massive tree to which his gown had become attached. Adrenaline
rushing, he circled away, getting to the other side, away to safety ... or so he thought.
One arm still trapped in the gown, bent around the tree at an awkward angle, Ethan’s
breath caught as Aidan captured him from the other side.
“Ah-ha!” Triumph shone in Aidan’s eyes, open in a way the young man rarely let
anyone see. Aidan pressed the twisted length of material across Ethan’s chest and
pinned him to the tree with it, his hands on either side of Ethan’s body. “Gotcha.”
His chest rising and falling deeply with every breath he took, Ethan couldn’t look away.
Never wanted to whenever they were together. “Yeah.” The sun twinkled high in the
sky, breaking through the treetops with sharply-angled slashes of bright light. But the
air around Ethan felt charged with electricity, as if Mother Nature prepared for a storm.
“You got me.”
“Yeah.” Aidan’s hold on the tree loosened and, along with the material, it fell to Ethan’s
waist. “I do, don’t I.” He let go of the wrinkled gown entirely and leaned in, entwining
his fingers with Ethan’s free hand as he did. “Shit,” Aidan muttered, “I knew you felt it
too.”
“Yeah.” The confession slipped out before Ethan could call it back.
“Yeah, I thought so.” Closing the small distance between them, Aidan cursed one more
time. “Hoped so,” he added roughly, and then sealed his lips to Ethan’s, crushing him
with a hard kiss.
Elation whipped through Ethan as everything he’d ever wanted burst to life right in
front of him, against him, in him, as Aidan squeezed their hands together and forced his
way inside Ethan’s mouth, deepening the kiss. Ethan gave into the moan he’d wanted to
let escape him just a few minutes ago and moved into Aidan’s space, rubbing himself

head, smiling with new power when Aidan’s focus openly fell to his bare chest, “we
take a swim in the creek and make a plan!” He tackled Aidan around the waist. To the
shouts and protests of the other young man, Ethan sent them both tumbling into the
frigid water.

Ethan couldn’t keep the smile off his face the next morning as he almost skipped up the
front porch to Aidan’s house and gave a sharp, happy rap to the red painted front door.
Aidan’s younger brother Dev answered his knock.
“Oh, hey,” Dev said, his voice cracking well beyond that of a normal twelve-year-old
adolescent.
“Hey.” Ethan decided to overlook the moisture brimming in Dev’s eyes. He was
probably in trouble, and the kid wouldn’t want an older boy noticing and commenting.
“Can I come in? I’m here to see Aidan.”
“You won’t find him here.”
“What?” Icy fingers ran down Ethan’s back. He stooped down, getting a better look at
the tears in Devlin’s eyes. “What’s the matter? What’s going on?”
Devlin’s voice broke pitifully, but he shared.
With only a note left on the kitchen table that said he had to leave and not to worry
about him or try to find him, Aidan was gone.
