YOUHAVECALLEDZENTHEONLYLIVINGRELIGION?
Maneesha,beforeyouaskedthequestion,thetreeshaveheardit.
Itisoneofthemostfundamentalthingstoberememberedbyallofyouthatareligionislivingonly
whenthereisnoorganizeddoctrine,nosystemofbeliefs,nodogma,notheology.Whenthereis
justthissilenceandthetreesenjoyingthedanceinthebreeze,inyourheartsomethinggrows.Itis
yourown,itdoesnotcomefromanyscripture;nobodycangiveittoyoubecauseitisnotknowledge.
ThatisthegreatestdifferencebetweenallthereligionsononesideandZenontheotherside.All
religionsexceptZenaredead.Theyhavebecomefossilizedtheologies,systemsofphilosophies,
doctrines,buttheyhaveforgottenthelanguageofthetrees.Theyhaveforgottenthesilenceinwhich
eventreescanbeheardandunderstood.Theyhaveforgottenthejoythathastobenaturaland
spontaneoustotheheartofeverylivingbeing.
Themomenttheexperiencebecomesanexplanation,anexpression,itbreathesnomore;itisdead
–andallovertheworldpeoplearecarryingdeaddoctrines.

IcallZentheonlylivingreligionbecauseitisnotareligion,butonlyareligiousness.Ithasno
dogma,itdoesnotdependonanyfounder.Ithasnopast;infactithasnothingtoteachyou.Itis
thestrangestthingthathashappenedinthewholehistoryofmankind–strangestbecauseitenjoys
inemptiness,itblossomsinnothingness.Itisfulfilledininnocence,innotknowing.Itdoesnot
discriminatebetweenthemundaneandthesacred.Forit,allthatis,issacred.
Lifeissacredwhateverform,whatevershape.
Whereverthereissomethinglivingandaliveitissacred.
TodaywearebeginningtodiscussafewincidentsinthelonghistoryofZen–whichareunique
becausenootherreligionexistsonanecdotes.Theyarenotholyscripture;theyaresimplyincidents
thathavehappened.
Itisuptoyou...
Ifyouunderstandthemtheycanopenyoureyesandyourheart.Ifyoudon’tunderstandthem
nothingelsewilleverbeabletoopenyoureyesandyourheart.AndwhatIamsayingiscategorical,
absolute.
Thesesmallanecdotesintheirverysmallnessjustlikedewdropscontainthewholesecretofthe
ocean.
Ifyoucanunderstandthedewdropthereisnoneedtounderstandtheoceanyouhaveunderstood
it.
Pleasebeverysilentandcareful.
EmperorWuofChinaaskedBodhidharma...Fourteenhundredyearsbefore,Bodhidharmahad
gonetoChina.Hewasauniqueman:hisstatements,hisactions,hisbehavior,allcontainedthe
pureessenceofreligion.Buthewasnotaprofessor,hewasnotamissionary.Hewasamanwho
wasreadytosharehisbeingwithyouwithoutholdinganythingback–butyouhavetobereadyto
receiveit.
Naturally,EmperorWuaskedBodhidharma,WHATISTHEFIRSTPRINCIPLEOFTHEHOLY
TEACHINGS?That’showotherBuddhistmonkshaddescribedittohim.ButBodhidharmawas
notanordinaryBuddhistmonk;infact,hehasnothingtodowithBuddhism.Heishisownself–he
belongstonobody.ItisjustacoincidencethathismasterhappenedtobeaBuddhist.Hehimself
neversaidthathewasaBuddhist;hecouldnotcommitsuchagreatstupidity.
Youwillseethatthemanwasalmostalionandhiswordswerejustliketheroarofalion.Those
whohaveseenBodhidharmawereblessedpeopleandthosewhounderstoodhim,thereisnoway
todefinetheirgratitude.Hewasnotamanofmanywords;hewasverytelegraphic.Hedidnot
useasinglewordmorethanneeded.Hedidnotcareaboutlanguage;hedidnotcareaboutthe
emperor...Hecaredonlyaboutthetruth–thatithasnottobespoiledbyanydescription,thatit
shouldbekeptcleanandpure.

Doyouseethetelegraphiclanguage?HehasbeenaskedbyEmperorWuthefirstprincipleofholy
teachingsandheissayingemptinessisthefirst,butdon’tcallitholiness–thereisnoholiness.
Wheneverythingisholywhatisthepointtocallsomethingholy?Categoriesarepossibleonlywhen
somethingcanbeunholy.
Totheexperienceoftheawakenedthereisonlynothingnesssopure,solovelysobeautiful.
Butitisdifficulttocallit‘holy’becausethatbeautifulwordhasbeencorruptedbythereligions,by
creatingafictitiousentity:UNholiness.Justtomakesomebodyasainttheyhavemadethewhole
ofhumanitysinners.
Therealityis:thereisnosaintandtherearenosinners;thereareonlypeoplewhoareasleep
andthereareonlypeoplewhoareawake.Thedifferenceissosmallthatjustalittleice-coldwater
thrownintoyoureyes–andthedifferencedisappears.
EMPTINESS,NOHOLINESS–andBodhidharmahassaidallthatcanbesaid.Infacthehassaid
eventhatwhichcannotbesaid;histeachingiscomplete.Hehascometothefullpointinasingle
sentence–notevenacompletegrammaticalsentence,butjustahint:
EMPTINESS,NOHOLINESS.
EmperorWuwasoneofthegreatestemperorsofChina,averyculturedman.Ithithimverystrongly.
Heneverexpectedthatanybodyshouldmisbehaveinfrontofthegreatemperor.Andthismandoes
notevensay,YourHoliness,or,YourHighness.Hedoesnotevenaddresstheemperor.Allthathe
saysis:EMPTINESS,NOHOLINESS.
Certainlyhemusthavebeenangryinside;itisnatural–hehadbeenwaitingforthreeyears.
Bodhidharmatookthreeyearstoreach–andhehadheardsomuchaboutthemanandtheman
seemstobeaverystrangefellow,alittleweird.Offendedbutnotshowingit,behavinglikeacultured,
sophisticatedhypocrite,heagainasked,”Thenwhoisthisstandingbeforeme?Ifthefirstprinciple
ofexistenceisemptinessandthereisnothingholy,thenwhoareyou?”WHOISTHISSTANDING
BEFOREME?
GreatwasBodhidharma.IcannotconceiveofanybodyelseinhisplacewhenIseehisanswer.It
issimplyjusthisown,absolutelyauthentic.Hedoesnotbotherthattheemperorisoffended–he
offendsevenmore.Butwhathesaysissuchagreattruththatheisnotresponsible.
Truthalwaysoffends.
That’swhytruthisalwayscrucified.
Hesimplysaid,NOKNOWING.
Theemperorhadasked,WHOISTHISSTANDINGBEFOREME?andBodhidharmasaid,NO
KNOWING.Hedoesnotevenusetheword‘I’.Yousimplyseethebeautyofthemanandhisutter
commitmenttotruth–thathewillnotdescendevenasinglestepsothathecanbeunderstood.
Understoodornothiscommitmentistothetruth,nottoanyemperor.
